Reaction: Grossing only $21 million at the domestic box office is going to pretty much doom any release, even medium sized films, unless it is a hit overseas. While not a huge flop overseas, it wasn't enough to make up for the poor domestic box office showing.
"The story is down-trodden and the characters - even the heroes - are hard to root for. Vanessa Kirby does what she can in the lead role, but the characters, casting and story surrounding her can be downright preposterous at times." - Gregory Fletcher, Los Angeles Times-Journal
"The Boy in the Suitcase is clustered to start off, introducing more characters than it knows what to do with. But once it gets going, it’s a pretty capable mystery. Not everything works, and it gets a little too sexually graphic (especially at the end), but I can see this being a good pick for movie night if you’re bored." - Mitchell Parker, New York Times
"The Boy in the Suitcase has an interesting set-up for its mystery, which earns a decent amount of audience goodwill early on. However the film squanders that with an uneven thriller that struggles to piece together its mystery. Vanessa Kirby is strong in the lead role, even though her actions are often incomprehensible." - Justin Rodriguez, Detroit Free Press
Rated R for graphic violence, disturbing images, thematic material and sexual content/nudity
