Plot:Plot: Paul Marsh (Billy Magnussen) is a young American tycoon, worried by a mysterious past and strange recurring dreams, in which he sees himself swimming at the bottom of the sea, along with an ominous octopus-like creature with a face with a beautiful girl. One day the boy decides to leave for a vacation aboard his yacht off the coast of New England with his girlfriend Barbara (Teresa Palmer) and their best friends who have just married, Howard (Kyle Gallner) and Vicky Jenkins (Katie Cassidy). The first day of travel seems peaceful even if mysteriously dead marine animals are found. The next day the group is surprised by a very violent and sudden storm that seems to come from nowhere since the sky was clear until a short time before, Paul manages to save the yacht from sinking but the boat goes stranded on a cliff after being pushed by the marine current as the yacht had engine problems caused by the violent storm. During this adventure Vicky, falling, seriously injures his leg and needs care. Paul and Barbara decide to reach the shore with a small rowboat to seek help, while Howard decides to stay with his wife. As the two boys move away Vicky leans over to greet them and blood drops fall into the water and a few seconds later we notice a mysterious presence that silently approaches the yacht, attracted by Vicky's blood.

Meanwhile, Paul and Barbara row up to the shore and don't know exactly where they are. They arrive in a fishing village called Larroca, the country seems almost deserted, dirty, old with a smell of rottenness that at first glance makes Barbara almost vomit. The two young people seek help but the few inhabitants they meet have a scruffy appearance and apparently hostile attitudes. An apparently kind lady tries to throw a pot of boiling water at them and an old man threatens them with an old pitchfork with spikes that seem to be stained with blood. At a certain point they find the church in the village that has strange symbols and words of a religious order unknown: the Esoteric Order of Neran. In the church the two meet Clint (Robert Englund) the priest of the town who apologizes for the behavior of his fellow villagers and says that in recent years they have practically never had visits. Clint offers the two a hot tea and the girl tries to ask so 'is this esoteric Neran Order, the priest Clint laughs and answers vaguely and then offers his help by commissioning two fishermen to accompany Paul aboard the boat to help their friends, while Barbara decides to stay on land and wait in a small inn. The two greet each other with a hug and Paul tells the girl to pay attention because he has a strange feeling. Barbara, an independent girl and even an adventurer, gently tells him not to worry. Shortly after, the girl feels a lot of weakness in her body and is attacked by the priest and the hotel guardian. Meanwhile, Paul joins the yacht, but there is no sign of Howard and Vicky. The yacht is not in disarray except for a liquid similar to oily or muddy water on the ground and the boy seems to smell a smell similar to that he had heard in the town of Larroca. Also there was blood near the bed that was probably from Vicky.

Paul is worried and when he returns to the shore Paul reaches the inn where his girlfriend had settled and finds no one but is reached shortly after by Clint who informs him that Barbara has left the village in a hurry without saying anything and was unable to stop her.

At this point the boy, tired and confused, lies on the bed to understand what to do and falls asleep. At this point he is tormented again by a nightmare in which an octopus is attacking him with tentacles and wakes up. The girl looks out the window and realizes that a crowd of villagers surrounds the hotel, interested in him and with anything but peaceful intentions and is therefore forced to run away. During a stampede in which he is chased by people with pitchforks and lighted torches, Paul finds himself in a tannery room, where he discovers with horror a macabre collection of masks and clothes made of human skins, in this moment he realizes that the inhabitants of the village they wear that kind of clothing and start naming the name of his girlfriend clutching his photo that he always carried in his shirt pocket. At some point while he is looking at the masks in horror he recognizes that of his friend Howard. At that moment he hears some people entering the tannery and manages to escape a new attack by the villagers. Paul manages to find a hiding place, manages to shelter inside a manhole, where he meets Ezequiel (Bill Murray), an old man apparently crazy and drunk, but who is actually aware of the terrible secret of the country: decades before the country had been deeply devoted to God but afflicted from a serious lack of fish that had brought famine and poverty. One day in Larroca came a sailor named Orpheus Cambarro, who mocked the villagers for their devotion to God and promised them to bring a new god into the town, who would fill their fish nets and gold from the sea if they accepted to worship him: the evil Neran. The population then denied God, destroying all the symbols of faith and Cambarro established a new religious order in the country, but Neran began to ask for human victims in sacrifice. Ezequiel's parents were killed while the village women were offered to the monster to be impregnated and give birth to a monstrous dynasty: in fact, with the exception of Ezequiel (given to all for dead), all the people of the town are inhuman creatures similar to fish, which gradually lose their human side to reach their father in his kingdom at the bottom of the sea. After a first moment of skepticism, Paul Marsh asks Ezequiel to help him escape from Larroca. Ezequiel initially frightened of leaving his hiding place leads him to the palace of Xavier Cambarro (Guy Peace), mayor of the city and nephew of Orpheus, to steal his car and escape.

During the search Paul is again chased by some villagers and is forced to hide in a room. In this room, sitting on a chair and reading a book, there is a beautiful girl, Arya (Ana de Armas) who welcomes him with a warm greeting when she notices the presence of the young man. Arya is the mayor's daughter and strangely knows her name and knows her nightmares. But the strangest thing is that his face is the copy of the girl he often sees in his dreams. Paul is increasingly confused by this unreal situation and meanwhile the girl begins to touch his face and hair until he pushes her away. The two are interrupted by the arrival of Xavier and other people. Arya helps Paul hide and then helps him escape. Paul seems not to resist the charm of the girl, he feels like a kind of ancient call inside him and then the girl tries to seduce the boy but when she takes off her emerald green dress, Paul realizes that the girl is actually a monster with two tentacles instead of legs. He flees in horror and is immediately captured and locked up in a barn where he finds Ezequiel, Barbara and Vicky, who discovers she is alive but mutilated in the injured leg. Vicky visibly suffering and almost crazy says she was offered to Neran and made pregnant by him, after witnessing Howard's brutal killing. Soon,Priest Clint and the villagers arrive at the barn to give prisoners an ultimatum: to serve their God or die. Vicky, shocked by the violence she has suffered, manages to take a knife from a guard and kills herself by stabbing herself in the stomach, while Barbara is taken to church to be offered in sacrifice and Paul and Ezequiel in a shed to be killed. Here Ezequiel dies sacrificing himself to save Paul. After that while Clint is slaughtering him the priest is stopped by Arya pushes him away by dropping the knife to the ground. Arya, professes herself in love with him, tells him that she has no choice but to be with her and embrace the cult of Neran. By pretending to accept the woman's condition, Paul is released while Arya leaves happy. Shortly after Paul is freed Clint approaches him giving him the hand saying that now they had to go to the church to witness the sacrifice and Paul in response kills him with the knife that had fallen to the ground previously. After he also killed the other guards, Paul runs to the church to save Barbara. In the basement of the church Arya and the other citizens celebrate a black mass in honor of Neran, in which Barbara is lowered into a trapdoor overlooking the sea. Paul tries to save his girlfriend, but it's too late. Paul first witnesses a fetid smell and then sees Neran emerge from the depths of the sea and grab Barbara with his tentacles taking her away with him. Desperate for the girl's disappearance, Paul tries to pounce on Xavier, who manages to stop him and hurt him on the shoulder before Arya can stop him. Arya then tells Paul a horrible truth: he is Xavier's son and Arya's brother. Many years before, Xavier (who was still human at the time), on one of his trips, had kidnapped several women and taken them to Larroca and others raped, including the woman who would become Paul's mother. Shocked by this horrible revelation, Paul has a collision with Xavier who stabs him in the stomach calling him "the wrong son". Before Paul dies, Arya angrily hits his father and manages to dive with Paul into the water. Underwater Paul begins his transformation process, making gills appear on his stomach. The film ends with him along with Arya playing and swimming in the sea.

Post-Credits: You see Xavier being medicated by some inhabitants until suddenly you hear some noises in the water ... and then giggles, many terrifying giggles until the figures emerge from the water, killing and mutilating all under Xavier's terrified show. The spectators, they only see the terrified look while in the background they only hear screams, people who die and giggles and then silence. At this point the figures disappear and there is only Xavier alive until a wonderful figure slowly emerges from the water with a strange object in the hair that comes close to Xavier while the man remains there almost hypnotized (we see this figure approaching the eyes of Xavier who sees this figure a little distorted) until the figure bites him violently tearing a piece of meat from him. the camera shows the figure well, it is the queen of the mermaids (Olivia Munn) with a blood-stained mouth and a disturbing smile.
