Reaction: After three profitable films (Pudd'nhead Wilson, Lullabies for Little Criminals, Alex + Ada), Kindred becomes Ava DuVernay's first box office bomb for Last Resort Films (but at least it didn't bomb as hard as her adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time for Disney). Ultimately the film had high talent costs and wasn't especially marketable, a problem we seem to be facing a lot recently.
"Kindred is a film that comes off as very happy with itself. It seems to trying to tick as many progressive boxes as possible. Ava DuVernay is not exactly a subtle filmmaker, with her style beating these points into the audience." - Ken Decker, Denver Post
"I won't get into any social agenda the film, and the novel before it, has. As a film, Kindred is okay. The transitions are abrupt and could have potentially been handled better, but it is anchored by some strong performances, especially from Lupita Nyong'o and Domhnall Gleeson (Chris Pratt feels wasted on his role)." - Richard Park, Globe and Mail
"The time travel aspects make little to no sense, but the film pushes past that issue fairly well. The film captures mood and atmosphere nicely and tells an interesting story." - Janet Donnelly, Empire Magazine
Rated R for violent content, some sexuality and a rape
