Plot: About 20 years have passed since CyberLife launched androids on the market with perfect human features designed for any type of work. The number of androids has significantly increased the unemployment rate, causing discontent among the American population. Androids are programmed to carry out the orders of humans and are unable to feel any emotion and differ from humans by two small bright blue circles on the temples.

A man enters the Eden Club, a strip club. He watches the girls dance while drinking lots of beer and then Roxanne (Leslie Grace) a WR400 android. The man orders her to lie down on the bed and starts caressing them until he begins to be violent first with words. At that point Roxanne begins to change expression, the LED on her temple starts flashing and starts looking around in terror. As soon as the man touches her, she reacts by blocking his hands and they start fighting until the man is strangled. Roxanne puts her hands on her head realizing that she has not obeyed the human's instructions. Roxanne goes to another private room where there is another blue-haired Roxanne, kisses her and tells her they need to find Jericho.

November 5, 2038, 3:38 pm. An android reboots in the Android Zone store. In front of her are her salesman and Todd Williams (Woody Harrelson) who has gone to pick it up and her name is re-registered as "Kara" (Jennifer Lawrence). The vendor says that her memory has been restored and that the android was compromised but that he was able to repair it almost perfectly. Todd advises Kara to be good when they get home and the android nods at her as she looks out the car window. When they enter the house there is a lot of clutter and dirt. Todd abruptly orders Kara to do the housework and take care of his daughter Alice (Lexi Rabe). Kara goes to the laundry room to do the laundry and discovers a pack of Red Ice (a rather dangerous common type of drug) hidden in a pocket. As Kara tidies Todd's room, she discovers a jar of pills, a gun, and seemingly alarming letters from the bank. Kara goes to spend time with Kara in her room. Kara smiles and stands up saying that they were probably friends with her before she reset and that they could be friends again. Alice gives Kara a key pointing to a box and then she runs away downstairs. Kara opens the box. Inside is a pressed four-leaf clover, a photograph of the Williams family, and finally distressing and disturbing drawings made by Alice. The drawings reveal that Todd is very violent towards her and that Kara's recent destruction had been at his hands. While she is walking down the stairs, Todd is on the couch as he finishes smoking a Red Ice. He starts yelling at Alice. He grabs her angrily by shaking her and accuses her of hating him, but at some point he starts crying, apologizing and hugging her.

Markus (Michael B. Jordan) , an RK-200 android accused of contributing to the death of his master, is thrown into a landfill full of dying or destroyed androids. Markus restarts and runs a diagnostic on himself, and realizes that he is missing his legs and he has various other components compromised. He finds legs that can fit. As he starts to leave, he is grabbed by a dying android who tells him there is a "place where we can be free", then tells Markus to find Jericho, considered a safe haven for androids. to go. Markus leaves the original section of the junkyard and finds the other components to fix his other compromised parts taken by destroyed androids. With his body completely complete Markus escapes the junkyard before removing his LED and then heads to the city in search of Jericho.

Kara is finishing dinner while it rains hard outside. Alice is sitting at the table while Todd is watching a Hockey match smoking a Red Ice and then he too sits at the table. As Kara serves dinner, Todd begins to blame Alice for all the things that go wrong in his life. He then throws the plate on the wall and turns the table over. Todd furiously slaps Alice, who cries and runs upstairs. Kara tries to reach Alice to comfort her but Todd orders her to stay still otherwise he would have destroyed her worse than last time. Todd storms upstairs after Alice. Kara is programmed to obey, standing still in the living room as the noises from upstairs become louder and more disturbing. Kara heads upstairs when she hears Alice calling for help again. Kara arrives in Alice's room as Todd approaches with the belt in hand. Kara stands in front of her to protect her. Todd pushes her away forcefully causing her to fall to the ground and then pounces on her. He starts banging her head violently on the ground until Alice intervenes but she is pushed to the ground by Todd. Kara takes the little girl by the hand and they run down her back exit as Todd chases them with the gun. Todd points the gun at them. Kara manages to grab the gun and point it at Todd and starts backing up the street. She then throws her gun away and runs off with Alice.

Kara and Alice board a bus to the terminus until the driver wakes them up. Then they go down and try to find a new place to spend the night. Once settled for the night, Alice asks why Todd could never love her despite her attempts to be a good daughter. In the morning, Kara sees police patrols and realizes they are looking for them. She takes Alice by her hand telling her to stay calm, that she will protect her at all costs and they manage to leave the place without being discovered by the cops. At the last moment a policeman notices their presence and starts chasing them. The two find themselves on the edge of a high-speed highway. The cops are on their way and the two decide to try and cross the highway. Even at the risk of being run over, they manage to go to the other side and escape.

Markus wanders around the city and finds traces made of symbols and writing on the walls that reveal Jericho's location in an old abandoned merchant ship. Markus is introduced to key leaders from Jericho, North (Samara Weaving) and Josh (Tyler James Williams) and Simon (Dacre Montgomery). After talking to them, he discovers that Jericho isn't really a safe haven, but a place to hide from humans. They acknowledge that they have just returned from a Cyberlife warehouse and have recovered Thriium and other biocomponents in order to heal injured androids. Markus approaches North, who appears indifferent as she sits on a box and bounces a tennis ball against a wall, making no eye contact with Markus. Markus tries to talk to her by asking her about her past but she immediately shows that she is bitter about what she has been through and she hates talking about it.

Kara and Alice reach the location given to them by the WR600, which turns out to be the home of a seemingly sympathetic human, Zlatko Andronikov (Alfred Molina) and his android Luther (Brandon Micheal Hall). Kara convinces Zlatko to help them, in which he tells them that Canada is a great place to go because there are no laws towards androids and they would be able to live a normal life there. Zlatko tells Kara that she will have to remove her locator so she can get there undetected, and leads the group to the basement where he hides the equipment needed for this. She gets into the car and as he locks her in place. He informs her that when the androids become deviant, the trackers stop working anyway. In truth, he intends to erase Kara's memory and use her as her servant, just like Luther. As Zlatko takes Alice away, Kara attempts to get out of the car before he restores her. Just before the car reaches 100% Kara manages to get rid of her but she seems to have forgotten most of her memories. Kara heads to the living room where she meets Luther, who tells her to bring dinner to Zlatko. She sees Alice's stuffed animal lying on the sofa and has a quick flash but she continues to do what she is told. After bringing dinner to Zlatko Kara she walks around her house until she finds a mutilated android who tells her to escape. Kara doesn't understand until she hears the news about an android and a runaway girl crossing the highway. At that point her memories hit Kara who falls to her knees holding her chest, then she gets up to go find the little girl. Kara searches for the girl all over the house being careful not to be seen and she manages to find her. The two hug tightly and try to escape but Zlatko notices their absence and orders Luther to help him find them and takes a rifle. The two run downstairs and out the back door. Alice slips during the run, Kara picks her up and begs her to escape, but Alice refuses to abandon her and they are joined by Zlatko and Luther. Devastated by Alice trying to protect Kara, Luther frees himself from Zlatko's programming and takes the rifle out of his hand by hitting his master in the face. A group of horribly mutilated androids come out of the house and pounce on their jailer, killing him. Kara covers Alice’s eyes so as not to show the violent scene. At that point Luther offers to help them reach someone who can really help them cross the line, which she accepts.

The next morning Markus is sitting on a bench and observing how humans treat androids. Markus notices a newspaper article about Stratford Tower which claims that he has state-of-the-art transmission technology. Markus returns to Jericho and tells the others that he has decided to send a message to the humans by infiltrating the Stratford Tower to hijack the Channel 16 broadcast room. North supports the decision. The four androids infiltrate the interior without much trouble. However, when they arrive near the transmission room they are discovered by one of the employees, who escapes to activate the alarm. Markus reluctantly decides to shoot and the man falls to the ground presumably dead. North cheers him up by saying there was no other way while Simon reprimands him stating that they are not murderers and could have been done another way. Markus will then send a message to the humans and saying to humans that they want the androids to be freed and no longer treated as slaves or used as objects to be exploited or destroyed at will. After the broadcast, the SWAT raids the building, forcing Markus and the others to head to the roof to parachute and escape. While escaping Simon is seriously shot and tells the others to go and leave him there. Markus doesn't want to but then he is convinced and parachutes himself from the building.

Meanwhile, Kara, Alice and Luther stole Zlatko's car to get to the place Luther talked about. The car breaks down and they find an abandoned amusement park called Pirates' Cove. They find Jerry (Barry Keoghan), an EM400 android, who greets them, but unfortunately dies due to the freezing conditions. Kara sits next to Luther watching the sleeping little girl smiling together. Luther tells Kara with a moment's hesitation that he has an important thing to tell her but he can't because a group of snow-worn androids start storming the tavern. They turn out to be a frightening group of EM400s who collectively call themselves “Jerry.” He explains to Jerry that they had seen the fire going on in the tavern, and were afraid that the humans had returned to harm them, but they are elated when they find out that they are only androids and a little girl. The Jerry's try to cheer Alice up by starting a still-functioning carousel. Kara and Luther will watch Alice ride the carousel and observe her smile for the first time.

Markus stands on the roof of an abandoned bar near Jericho and is playing the guitar. North appears and starts talking to Markus. North reveals that she worked as a stripper and a few weeks before her after driving a client home she realized that she could no longer bear her own existence and she strangled the client before fleeing in fear. Markus and the company head to the Woodward Mall Center to convert more androids and gather to send a message to the humans again. Markus asks some androids to block the road, then Markus, Josh and North and the newly converted androids start walking in the center slowly creating a march shouting slogans about freedom as more and more androids join the protest. People watch in amazement as they see the androids marching and not obeying their orders and joining the march. The androids face a barrier of riot cops, who say that their demonstration is illegal and that they must disperse. Markus says no and the other androids stand still. North notices that the cops are loading their weapons and warns Markus who orders the androids to disperse. The agents start shooting, killing many of the androids.

Kara, Alice and Luther reach a farm belonging to Rose Chapman (Octavia Spencer) and her son Adam (Caleb McLaughlin), which is a temporary refuge for androids. Kara asks Rose if she can help them cross the border, Rose is cautious and tells Kara that it is very risky and that it would be safer for Kara and her family to stay with her and Adam until things settle down in Detroit. Rose explains what is happening and that the government has issued the order to withdraw all the androids to be destroyed. Kara insists that Alice needs a safe and stable life, which is why they have to cross the border into Canada. Adam starts arguing with his mother for fear of being arrested for harboring androids and says he doesn't believe they are living beings. After he leaves, a tearful Rose tells Kara that she will see what she can do to get them across the border as soon as possible but that first she will have to go and check the situation. After Rose leaves, Kara tries to reassure Adam and confesses that she really has been feeling emotions since meeting Alice, even though many other people think that androids are just machines and that she doesn't want to cause trouble for him and his mother. At that moment a police officer arrives at the door, patrolling the area for androids. Kara must quickly hide all the evidence indicating the presence of deviants and lock the other androids inside the laundry room. The officer enters the house and starts asking nervous Adam and Kara questions but doesn't suspect anything and leaves. Shortly thereafter, Rose comes back with urgent negative news and says they have to flee soon. She reveals that the Canadian border is probably manned by a large number of armed soldiers. She informs Kara and Luther that she no longer has passports and that they will have to go to Jericho to collect them and gives them directions to reach him.

Kara, Alice and Luther drive around Detroit in Rose's old car toward Jericho. The three watch scenes of the army going into people's homes, withdrawing androids and killing on the spot those who try to resist or try to escape. The three reach Jericho, inside there are many androids. Kara holds Alice by her hand and makes her sit on a wooden crate near a fire to warm up and tells Luther to stay close to her. Kara finds Markus who is with North trying to figure out what to do. She explains that she needs to cross the border with a little girl. Markus replies that the city is under curfew and that the soldiers are capturing androids, taking them to special camps to destroy them. Kara insists and the leader agrees to help the group by giving fake IDs to cross the border. As she returns to her group, Kara sees an android that looks identical to Alice. She gets stuck staring at her for a few seconds with a confused expression and unlocks a memory of a piece of mail he had glimpsed in Todd's room advertising this model and realizes that Alice is not a human child but that she is an android designed to allow humans to simulate a child rearing experience. Luther asks her if she loves Alice less now after learning the truth and says he believes Kara shouldn't consider their relationship false, since Alice really considers Kara as the mother she always wanted and Kara considers Alice like the child she always wanted. Kara sits next to Alice and hugs her affectionately.

North arrives with the passports and hands them to Luther until noises are heard coming from outside. Markus realizes that the army is raiding and orders everyone to escape. The soldiers have entered and begin to capture or shoot the androids. Kara picks up Alice and they run away with Luther. Luther is shot by a soldier while on the run and pushes Kara to escape by hiding in some sort of closet. Kara and Alice manage to find the exit along with several others, but the soldiers behind them start shooting at the entire group. Kara throws herself on the ground with Alice and tells her to pretend she is dead. Alice and Kara are loaded into a transport truck with other deviants. Alice is scared and Kara holds her hand reassuring her. Next to them a WR-400 holding a lock of blue hair shows up calling itself Roxanne also saying a few nice words to reassure Alice. The truck stops at a Recall Center, full of armed soldiers and protected by thick barbed wire fences. The soldiers order the deviants to get off the truck. Kara hesitates to get off for a moment and a soldier forcibly forces her out, terrifying Alice. After exiting the truck, a soldier asks Kara and Alice to deactivate their skins by turning completely white. A soldier intimidates Alice to throw her teddy bear but then has a moment of humanity when Kara begs him to have a moment of pity for Alice and to keep her toy.

Markus, North and Josh are standing in Hart Plaza holding a flag showing the symbol of the revolution. North exclaims that the army has regrouped and outnumbered them, and Markus replies that their only hope is to be quick and overwhelm them to reach the place where the captured androids are being destroyed. Markus then leans over and aims at a soldier, firing at him and moving forward to take cover. Markus orders nearby androids to provide covering fire so that he can reach an abandoned car near Josh. Markus can then drag him to cover, rocking him as he dies in his arms, reminding Markus that the blood they shed will be in their hands. Markus makes Josh lie down and grabs his gun, joining the fight again.

Kara moves the android behind the structure and a myriad of destroyed or completely burned androids. Kara, after moving the dead android, realizes that the soldiers are sorting the various captured androids and realizes that Alice is gone and begins to despair as she is locked up in one of the many large enclosures full of waiting androids of death, while in the distance gunfire and explosions begin to be heard. Kara starts looking for and desperately calling for Alice and a drone starts aiming a red beam at her when she is too loud. In the next row she meets one of the Jerry's who says the soldiers arrived at Pirates Cove and captured them all and then separated. The Jerrys understand the situation and make contact with the other Jerry's in an attempt to find Alice. One of them says he saw her. At that point the Jerry's present get together and tell Kara that they will help her at all costs because Alice was the last thing they felt useful for and that they saw smiling. The guards start shooting and killing them. Kara, taking advantage of the confusion, has managed to reunite with Alice. She then looks at the Jerry's corpses being taken away. The two hold hands as they advance to the recycling chamber which will kill them. Kara tells Alice that she loves her so much and that they feel life flowing through them and that they fought together for a dream. Roxanne quietly enters the recycling chamber with her head down, the loud explosions and gunshots make it clear that the android rebellion has now arrived there. Kara turns to listen to the approaching explosions.

Markus continues to push the android rebellion forward, picks up a grenade and throws it at the soldiers who commanded a machine gun. Markus goes up and is forced to resist and coordinate the attack. He orders North to advance and with the machine gun they approach the end until a drone detonates the weapon risking to kill Markus, who manages to eliminate him just in time. Markus, North and the surviving androids look forward in anger and hope. The final assault takes place, Markus orders the remaining androids to advance. He is then repelled by a tank explosion, but stands up and rushes over a large number of soldiers. When all seems lost Markus locates a special rocket-propelled grenade and shoots it at the tanks, destroying them. At that point the army is forced to withdraw and abandon the recycling facilities. North rejoices as he approaches Markus and exclaims with glee that they have won but Markus replies with conviction that it is not a victory but that it is the beginning of a war. North and Markus advance through the structures and notice something familiar in front of the recycling chamber. North picks up the teddy bear, remembering Kara and Alice they met in Jericho, and starts looking around hoping that they survived. Meanwhile, a local TV helicopter is broadcasting the images live.

Todd Williams is hospitalized in a drug rehabilitation facility and is carefully watching TV in the living room with other people and starts crying when he recognizes the teddy bear that North picks up from the ground in front of the recycling chamber.
