Season 27 is off to a decent, but not spectacular start at the box office after two rounds. Here's The Roundup....
3. Box Office
While the box office good times ended with The Passenger bombing, five our of six films in Season 27 have earned a profit.
2. Norse: Valhalla
The action here was solid. Definitely better than other Jimmy Ellis-penned action films like Grayson or Atlantis. I did have some trouble following what was going on at times though, but it was solid overall thanks to the action and scope of the film.
1. The Passenger
It's a shame this one didn't make more money as I liked it. The twist was a bit too obvious and I'm still not sure about Olsen in her role, but the direction from Ari Aster and lead performance from Robert Pattinson made the film worthwhile.
3. Box Office
While the ratio of profits to flops is very good right now, the films that have made profits have not managed to break out as big hits yet. Hopefully that will turn around soon.
2. Home Before Dark
The film's ill-conceived structure and schizophrenic editing kill any goodwill the film earns from Robbie and Jackson-Cohen's performances. Thrillers need momentum to push things forward. This film never generated any.
1. Novel Adaptations
Home Before Dark felt like another example of the issue with recent novel adaptations - which is that they are not actually adaptations at all, they're more transcriptions. A vast majority of the writers penning novel adaptations in recent seasons don't seem to actually be trying to make the stories work as a film story, but are more content just transcribing the events of the novels.
