Reaction: A bit expensive for a drama, Desert Dreams appears to have been a tough sell overseas as the film bombed at the foreign box office which tanked the film's chances of profit. Thankfully the film did decent enough at the domestic box office to avoid more serious losses.
"A star is made and her name is Daisy Edgar-Jones! Here she outshines a big name supporting cast as Dorothy, playing the role as equal parts emotionally manipulative and fragile. The story is the type of thing we've seen before, but this time the execution is nailed by Ellis and Malone." - Charlie Sage, HBC-TV
"Some of Desert Dream's plot threads don't really seem to go anywhere, but the film works thanks to the richly drawn characters created by writers John Malone and Jimmy Ellis and the talented cast portraying them. Everybody in the cast does good work, but this is really Daisy Edgar-Jones' show."- Robert Avery, San Jose Mercury
"A tribute to the shady politics of classic Hollywood, Desert Dreams showcases Mackenzie's exceptional talent in drawing out the best performances from his cast, particularly McBride, O'Brien, Biel (who reveals a new aspect of herself), H. Macy (who is in the running for Best Supporting Actor award), and above all, Daisy Edgar-Jones, whose standout performance in a challenging role may provoke divided opinions. While Mackenzie's direction may not be the highlight, his prowess in eliciting strong portrayals from his actors is undeniable." - Sara Meyers, Times (UK)
Rated R for language, sexual content and thematic material
