Reaction: A rare novel adaptation of late to manage to turn a profit at the box office. It obviously didn't achieve that mark by very much, but it is a step in the right direction.

"For a Drama, I don't understand why I was so confused by The Girls. For me it once again falls victim to a direct novel adaptation. It almost seems like a lot of Rosie's adaptations are rather translations, copied straight from the book, and it does not translate to screen. The Girls is another example of a novel adaptation falling flat. Not even Foster's admirable direction can save this one." - Datreon Epps, Variety

"There is a good movie somewhere in The Girls that could have been found with some better editing and tightening of its content. As it stands, the film is a bit of a mess with not enough focus on either of its time periods/plot threads to find a focus. This lack of focus and meandering completely kills two strong leading performances from Jodie Foster and Millie Bobby Brown." - Dave Manning, Ridgefield Press

"The Girls has a lot of issues, but it excels in the casting department enough to make up for a good chunk of them. The film is too long, and obviously too beholden to its source material, which is a huge detriment to the film's plotting and pacing. There are several strong individual scenes, but the script by Rosie JoLove doesn't tie them together great. Jodie Foster, isn't a visually interesting filmmaker, but she does get good performances from the ensemble cast." - Cal Crowe, Washington Globe

Rated R for violence, language, drug content and sexuality/nudity
