A Second Look: Calamity

Welcome back for another edition of A Second Look with Jeff Stockton! In this segment I will take a "second look" at a past LRF release with a fresh set of eyes.

Round 6 sees the writing duo of Mo Buck and Chad Taylor re-teaming for the fourth time with Time Out! In honor of that, I decided to take a look at their first collaboration, Calamity, from back in Season 9. The star-studded drama was headlined by Leonardo DiCaprio, Anne Hathaway and Margot Robbie. The film tells the story of a man (DiCaprio) who disappears one day from his family only to be discovered living a completely new life in a different state years later. The film was pretty well-regarded, garnering a MUST SEE Metascore of 82 along with 9 total GRA nominations (winning 3 of them).

Taking a second look at Calamity now, I noticed mostly the same smaller issues with the film as I did the first time around (albeit there are few issues with the film. Spike Jonze still feels all wrong to direct the film. Jonze's quirky style simply doesn't work with the story, style or characters of the film. A better directorial match could have elevated the film to much higher heights. In fact, it stood out even more this time around. The story itself is really strong, but it doesn't always feel like a story best told in a film format at times.
