The Roundup with Jeff Stockton (Season 17 Round 1)

Welcome to Season 17 and the the season's first edition of The Roundup....

3. A Life
I'll be honest, I didn't like this film a whole lot. Individual scenes were good, but it just didn't have a lot of payoff. More on that later, but I did want to praise the classroom scene with Eisenberg correcting his students' spelling of "douche".

2. Box Office
Pretty decent box office to start the season off, thanks to the solid performance of the latest Alien movie and the impressive performance of the drama The King of Hearts.

1. The King of Hearts

The release slot of this film seems like a concentrated effort from the studio to get more films released early in seasons nominated for GRAs. And I can guarantee you'll see this one again come season's end and the awards season.

2. A Life
Like I said before, each scene was good, but it was a drama that was very low on drama. Even the seemingly pivotal moment of Eisebnerg catching Wilde cheating on him didn't seem like a very big event. While I'm happy nobody went to McDonald's or looked at Facebook in an Alex Conn film, this one needed more going on for me. It was too slight of scale.

1. Claire Foy
This is the second time someone has tried to cast in a "tough" role (the other being The Girl in the Spider's Web), and it really hasn't worked either time. Not to mention that here they have the 5'4" Foy trying to fill the shoes of the 6'0" Sigourney Weaver.
