Welcome back for another edition of A Second Look with Jeff Stockton! In this segment I will take a "second look" at a past LRF release with a fresh set of eyes.
Yet another film that seems to have been forgotten in the annals of the early LRF catalog is Roanoke. A supernatural historical thriller about what happened to the Roanoke colony, it was a medium-sized box office success in the studio's first season. When it came out, I feel like I aligned with most critics and members of the audience in feeling that the film gets a bit preposterous at times, but also has moments of chills and thrills.
Looking at the film now, Roanoke is not a terrible film. It's a bit light on some of the details, like many early LRF projects, but the casting is great and Brad Anderson was an inspired choice to direct based on his skill-set. When I caught a look at its initial Metascore before looking at it again in the LRF Database, I honestly was more than a little worried. The film keeps things entertaining and fast-moving, even if it gets too silly a few times. Honestly this is exactly the type of film I'd want to see a Director's Cut of, if writer Clive Steinbeck ever makes his LRF return.
