Plot: In the future, a human mind was merged with software, and linked to Skynet. Which mind? Alex Murphy/Robocop.
Florence Langer (Lupita Nyong'o), a human soldier, learns of this and infiltrates Skynet to use their time machine device. She is on a mission to find and eliminate Alex Murphy (Patrick Wilson), since he is the key to Skynet and the overall destruction of the human race at the hands of the killer Terminators.
Florence arrives at Murphy’s home, but she learns he had already passed away (from the events of the original Robocop film), thus making her too late to kill Murphy as a human. She now must do what she can to create a makeshift plasma rifle.
She is able to test the rifle’s power, when an ED209 Robot finds her and demands she throw down her weapon, citing she is in a violation of the law. Florence destroys the ED209 with the plasma rifle.
Skynet becomes aware that it’s existence is in jeopardy, they program three Terminators - the hulking T-831 (Alan Ritchson), the faster and stealthier T-888 (Scott Adkins), and the bulky T-850 (Amin Joseph) - to hunt down Florence and protect Robocop at all cost.
Florence is hiding out in an effort to ambush Robocop, but her plan is thwarted when the Terminators show up and attempt to kill her.
She manages to escape the Terminators, albeit badly injured. Robocop takes her to the hospital. When she wakes up, she flips out. This is when Robocop is now aware that she was attacked by something not human. Florence tells Robocop how he is responsible for everything in the future.
Robocop investigates further, with the help of his friend Marie Lazarus (Mayim Bialik) wondering if what Florence was saying could be possible.
Plugged into as many databases as possible, he learns that Skynet has cast satellites orbiting over the earth; and in the future, nuclear war will be inevitable and Robocop’s mind is the cause of it all.
In one scene at the hospital, Robocop teams up with an ED209. They scan for life forms when a truck approaches, but no sign of life can be found. They fire upon the truck, knowing the terminators are in the truck. The truck explodes, but does nothing to destroy the Terminators.
They emerge from the fire, with Robocop and ED209 engaging in a firefight with the Terminators. Ed209 and the T-500 destroy each other, The T-5000 fights with Robocop and gets destroyed at the cost of one of Robocop’s arms, and The T-1500 sneaks into the hospital on the hunt for Florence. When it finds her, it is met by Florence’s plasma rifle, which destroys it.
We learn that Skynet doesn’t just want to take over Earth and eliminate mankind, but also do the same thing to other planets in the galaxy as well. The lucky ones would die by fire, while the rest would be hunted, starved and buried alive. Then they would be crushed, flattened and made as fuel for the terminators
.
Alex Murphy goes to visit his grave, he is met by two more Terminators, the feminine T-950 (Rinko Kikuchi) and a canine model T-K9.
Robocop is overpowered by them, and loses his arm, leg and body in the process! His head is preserved and taken away by the Terminators, so his mind can be merged with Skynet.
Florence and Marie track Robocop down, but it is too late for them! Robocop’s mind is now part of Skynet. When he used Marie’s software before, he was safe to travel within the database but now he is made into a slave and all he can do is watch as he brings forth armageddon. Millions of human lives are suffering, there is only one thing Alex Murphy can do: replicate himself, extracting what is most important to him: his human side. He forms a computer copy of his soul, hiding within Skynet’s mainframe. Always being hunted, but waiting for the right moment to attack.
He ends up taking over the facility that manufactures Terminators, he has only a little bit of time before he can be detected. He takes control of the machines, and starts to form a new body for himself. As Skynet is aware of the security breach, Terminators are sent in to destroy the facility.
Not before Alex Murphy is plugged into his new body! Rebuilt, reborn and ready to battle the Terminators to make things right! Using his new body and weapons, he is able to destroy Hunter Killers that targeted a group of people.
His new body is stronger, this is evident to his ability to catch a nuclear missile and redirect it back to a base full of Terminators.
As Robocop makes repairs to his body after the missile strike, he takes control of a factory, a new plan is suggested: Why not make a new army of Robocops?
So the new army of Robocops fight with the Terminators while the real Robocop makes his way into Skynet’s Central Cortex. This is where Skynet tries to use illusions on Murphy’s mind, but he overcomes the illusions and meets the Central AI of Skynet. The Central AI tries to bargain with Murphy, saying they can make him into a God. Robocop refuses, saying “Shut up and Die” before shutting down the control of the Terminators. Robocop takes to space and destroys a satellite orbiting earth. With the Terminators now defeated, mankind can start over. At this point, the future and past are now safe and the outcome of the war is avoided.
THE END
The credits roll with the most well known part of Robocop’s theme heard.
In a mid-credits scene, we learn that Skynet sent one Terminator, T-99 (Jon Barinholtz), before it was destroyed, in one last chance to save itself; however, this Terminator was sent to the wrong timeline. It was sent back to the Dinosaur age, where it is crushed by a Dinosaur.
The Terminator theme gets some love as the credit roll returns.
