Plot: Bill Settle (Bradley Cooper) is a scientist working on teleportation technology. The military is interested in his technology, as it is already advanced enough to teleport inanimate objects like weapons - vastly increasing US military efficiency. General Ashford (Bryan Cranston), however, threatens to cut off further funding for his projects unless he can modify his teleporters to allow for the teleportation of humans. Several human tests fail to work and Ashford pulls Bill's funding. Before he's locked out of the building, Bill tries to reprogram the teleporter one last time, using himself as the test subject. It appears to start working, but he ends up in the same teleporter he started in. Bill goes home and tells his wife Claire (Christina Hendricks) that he couldn't figure it out. She suggests that he go back to teaching.
Six months later, Bill is teaching engineering at a college. After class, one of his students, Sara (Madelaine Petsch), hits on him and asks if he wants to come to a party. He declines. He comes after work and has sex with Claire as they are trying to have a baby.
Bill starts to feel he is being followed. One day he is apporached at the college by Ashford, who tells him that his teleporter did teleport a human after all. He explains that an exact copy of Bill appeared in the second teleporter five days after he left the facility. Bill asks what happened to the copy and Ashford tells him that they kept the copy at the facility, but that it escaped when they decided to terminate it. Ashford tells Bill to call him if he sees the copy anywhere.
The copy follows Bill around the college. After seeing Sara flirt with Bill again, the copy pretends to be Bill and has sex with Sara in her dorm before killing her. The police come to see Bill at the college and tell him that his DNA was found at a crime scene. Bill has a solid alibi, but they arrest him anyways. Bill tells them that they need to talk to General Ashford, that he'll be able to explain things to them. Later, the police inform Bill that Ashford has been found dead with Bill's fingerprints left at the crime scene.
Meanwhile, the copy arrives at Bill's house, pretending to be the original Bill. Claire suggests they have sex to try for a baby again. Claire has sex with the copy. Bill is finally able to get ahold of Claire from the jail. Claire is stunned as the copy is still in bed following the sex. Bill tells her that she needs to bring his teleporter plans to the police to try to explain. When Claire hangs up the phone, the copy is up out of bed. He asks who she was talking to. Claire lies and says she was talking to her mother. They head into the kitchen, and Claire asks if he'd like some coffee. He says yes, and she smashes a coffee pot over the copy's head, knocking him out.
Claire grabs Bill's laptop and files and goes out to her car. As she is getting in, the copy runs out of the house and tries to get into the car. He begins pounding on the car as Claire speeds off. She tries to get the police to look at Bill's records, but they refuse as they claim to have more than enough evidence to convict Bill.
Claire goes to the military base Bill worked out of to try to talk to someone in charge. She tells the guards that she has to talk to someone about the murder of General Ashford. Finally, the guards take her to talk to Colonel Harrington (Laura Linney), Ashford's second-in-command. She explains to Harrington how Bill has been arrested for murders he hasn't committed - including that of Ashford. Harrington is not surprised by her story and tells her that Bill accidentally created an exact copy of himself with his teleportation device. Harrington tells Claire that the only way to free Bill is to capture the copy.
Harrington leads a unit of soldiers to Bill and Claire's house, where they find the copy. He maintains that he is the real Bill and that the copy that killed Sara and Ashford was the one arrested. Harrington hooks him up to a polygraph, which he passes. Claire then asks him what she wants to name their eventual child. He isn't sure, so Claire grabs one of the soldiers' stun guns and shoots him. She tells Harrington that she and Bill had decided that if they had a girl they would her after her grandmother who died five months ago, something the copy would not know. Harrington helps get the real Bill freed from jail. Claire finds out that she is pregnant, but is not sure if the father is the real Bill or the copy.
