Reaction: Ouch! The budget clearly got a bit out of control on this one, with the cast costing quite a bit of the film's budget. The decision to market the film as a supernatural drama may have also hurt the film, perhaps a campaign that drew more attention to the vampire/horror elements would have led to better box office results.
"Director Cary Fukunaga's style and penchant for heightened reality that seems just a bit off fits this subject matter perfectly - especially since it is a slow burn to get to the genre elements." - Michael Wilmington, Rolling Stone
"The big name cast here does solid work here, especially Walton Goggins who plays the wannabe vampire with tremendous glee."" - Justin Rodriguez, Detroit Free Press
"I'm not sure Hugh Jackman is really capable of giving a truly great performance. He's a song and dance man that isn't always believable in dramatic, non-physical roles. He is rather bland here, much as he was in Les Miserables, and the film suffers from it." - Clark Davis, JoBlo.com
