Edward Buck (Nicolaj Coster-Waldau) and Veronica Dare (Amber Heard) come in with the new rookie (Kit Harington), a SPARTAN. Dare, also a newcomer in the ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Trooper), the elite group of the the Marines. Their commanding office, Edward Buck, welcomes them into his squad, Alpha-Nine. It's time to drop. As the small, individual pods are dropping, they're able to see the destruction of New Mombasa by the Prophet of Regret. The Prophet then decides it's time to go home, drops an EMP, shutting down the pods and flees. All their pods crash all over the city.

Six hours after the Rookie's pod crashed, he's awakes and gets out of his pod, hoping to see one of the Alpha-Nine members. He blasts open the door of his pod and hides while two Covenant banshees fly over him. He walks around the square he dropped in and can't find any of his friends. He tries to contact them, but remembers the EMP. He finds a gun and grenades and continues to walk around, until a public phone starts ringing. The Superintendent (Michael Caine), the AI in charge New Mombasa is contacting Rookie. It informs him about the different beacons dropped by Alpha-Nine members in the past six hours. He then goes to Tayari Plaza, guided by the Superintendent, who indicates that the deacon they're looking for was dropped immediately after the pods crashed.

After the crash, Edward Buck did not waste time to get out of his pod and go directly to Veronica's, as he saw it crashing on the other side of Tayari Plaza. Buck fights Covenants to get all across the plaza, only to find an Engineer, a sort of biological supercomputer, holding the remains of her helmet. Unable to reach the Engineer, Buck continues to fight off Covenants, until Romeo appears on top of an adjacent building, snipes the Engineer and helps Buck escape. Seeing this, Buck tries his best to reach Romeo's position. They meet up and both decide to abandon the mission, find the rest of Alpha-Nine and get out of New Mombasa. As they're leaving, Romeo shots on a plasma energy barrel, creating an explosion, sending the helmet of Veronica Dare flying all across Tayari Plaza, where the Rookie finds it 6 hours later.

Rookie keeps receiving transmissions from the Superintendent, telling him to go to the New Mombasa Uplift building, where the space elevator is. He runs across New Mombasa to reach the destination and defeats a couple of enemies on his way. There, he finds a damaged drone on the ground. The Superintendent analyses the drone and figures out that Dutch destroyed 30 minutes after the crash.

Thirty minutes after the crash, Dutch awakens in his pod. He escapes and finds himself in front of the New Mombasa Uplift building. He observes a drone watching him and he guns it down.. He gets across the building and finds himself walking on the surprisingly quiet beach. He notices something coming from far away and soon finds out it's a platoon of Marines in warthogs, an SUV with a machine gun on top. They tell him that he needs to accompany them to the National Park a couple of miles away to take care of Covenant resistance. They drive through the park and kill dozens of Covenant. They are quickly overwhelmed by the large number of Covenants arriving. Dutch abandons the Marines in order to save his life and drives away with the Warthog, exiting the enclosed park by a huge hole in the wall, right into the streets of New Mombasa and he drives away.

After he found the drone, the Rookie continues to follow the Superintendent's instruction and he finds an abandoned Warthog. He starts driving around and the abandoned city. After a long moment of silence on the Superintendent's end, the Rookie receives a transmission from him saying that he located Veronica Dare. He has just the right amount of time to signal to him that she's in the Data Hive, where all of the Superintendent's memories and knowledge are, before it is shut down. Rookie takes drives away, in the Data Hive's direction.

Veronica Dare and Mickey Crespo found each other minutes after the crash. Being a true professional, Dare absolutely wanted to finish the mission they received: protecting the Superintendent's memories. They go to the Data Hive without looking for their lost squad members. When they reach the Data Hive building, they meet several Covenant forces and start battling them. They're able to take care of the vast majority of them and they're able to enter the building. When they enter, they're contacted by the Superintendent, who tells them that he contacted one of their teammate and he's coming to them. Dare and Mickey decide to wait for him.

The Rookie arrives at the Data Hive and meets with Dare and Mickey. They start to make their way inside the Data Hive, a building designed to go deep underground. Of course, the elevator is broken because of the EMP dropped by the Covenant earlier, so they have to go down on foot. It is suspiciously silent in the Data Hive and they reach the data center. There, they meet Vergil (William Shatner), a human-made creature who absorbed every memories and knowledge of the Superintendent. He tells them that they have to escort him out of the city before the Covenant destroy New Mombasa. They tell him that it shouldn't be hard to get him out of here, as there are no Covenant in the building. As soon as they pass the door of the data room, the current goes back on, the EMP effects are over.

Several Covenant were in fact hiding in the building, thanks to their brand new camouflage. They start attacking the small group and they have to do everything they can to protect Vergil. They slowly make their way up, defeating several Covenants in the process. Before they have a chance to go out of the building, a lot of enemies cross the door and the squad is under heavy fire. They hind behind a thick wall and they start wondering if they're going to make it out of the building alive. They hear a loud noise coming from the front door and a huge armored tank blasts the door open and takes care of the remaining Covenants. Edward Buck comes out and tells them to go into the armored truck outside, to protect Virgil while they're escorting him out of the city.

The Prophet of Truth (Ed Harris) gives orders to his best men to go out there and kill the entire squad as he absolutely wants to get his hands on Vergil, as the Superintendent could give him the knowledge to destroy a good portion of the Human's fleet and spaceships.

Inside the truck, Dare, Rookie and Mickey meet Dutch for the first time since the crash. Romeo is inside the tank with Buck. They are driving on the Coastal Highway, on their way to the extraction point. They're easily able to defend themselves against the Covenant, until a Scarab, a huge spider-like tank blocks the highway. They seek shelter inside a small building on the side of the road. They hide Vergil in the bathroom and they prepare themselves the face the horde of Covenants dropping from the Scarab and Battlecruisers. They're easily able to defeat the first few enemies to arrive, but they soon end up overwhelmed. One Covenant even makes his way into the building, looking for Vergil, when Buck comes from behind to kill him with his shotgun. They're doing their best to stay alive.

Alpha Nine sees a Human Battlecruiser coming they start shooting at the Covenants. Sgm. Avery Johnson (Chadwick Boseman) makes his way out of the ship and tells Alpha-Nine to run to the spaceship with Vergil. They're able to enter the ship with Johnson. When they're up in the air, they see the Scarab tank starting to load a blast and aiming in their direction. It unloads and misses the Battlecruiser by a hair. They fly over the destroyed New Mombasa with Vergil and they look at the devastated landscape of a previously marvelous city. Johnson congratulates them, but he tells them that he they still have a lot of work to do to defeat the Covenants.

Post-credit scene : A spaceship is destroyed by the Prophet of Truth's fleet. We see a fragment of the ship falling into the Earth's atmosphere. It crashes into the African jungle. The fragment was in fact a pod. It opens and out comes John-117 (Alexander Skarsgard). He gets up, takes his gun in his hands and start running away.
