Every film this round made a profit, which is certainly not always the case. Here's The Roundup....
3. Josh Brolin
It was great to see Josh Brolin back at the studio that produced his finest performance. He hasn't worked for LRF since Season 3 (Inferno), so it's been quite the long wait. Re-teaming with his American Gangster director, Brolin gave a solid lead performance that uses his charm and physicality well.
2. James Morgan
James Morgan and I have obviously had our run-ins in the the past (mostly due to High Society back in Season 6), however, his last handful of films have been populated with films that will go down as LRF classics (The Raven, Teslin, Yukon being my favorites), with Of Rocks and Sand definitely joining the mix (as it's probably my favorite of all the films he's written).
1. Of Rocks and Sand
I simply loved this movie. The casting is perfect, with the film led by three actors who have never been too shy about amping up the crazy energy for a project (see Chris Pine in Stretch and Smokin' Aces, see Rockwell in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and The Green Miles, and see Cage in just about anything he's ever done). Even though the film is about people who have done bad things, the energy is infectious and you can't help but become engrossed.
3. Profits
Overall box office has been pretty strong this season, but I can't help but worry a bit about the studio's profits once again having another down year. Fingers crossed there a some big enough hits in the last four rounds to bring those numbers up.
2. Soundtracks
Or rather the lack thereof. It feels like its been a little while now between film soundtracks. Hopefully we'll get at least 2-3 more in the rest of the season, other wise it will be slim pickings come GRA season.
1. Hollow Creek
I really enjoyed the first half of Hollow Creek. It had a somewhat original story of how the characters found themselves in the film's setting, plus a sly little nod to The Creature for those paying attention. But around the halfway point, Hollow Creek just became too familiar and predictable.
