Plot: Sarah Palmer (Sophie Turner) and Thomas Lasky (Allen Leech) report to their superiors what happened earlier on Genesis. The have a hard time explaining why John and Cortana slipped away from Osiris team. They apologize because Osiris can’t be here today to explain what happened either and they have little footage of the incident. They are asked if they are still pursuing John-117 and the Blue Team. They confirm they are and are actively pursuing them. They do not know where they are, unfortunately. Palmer and Lasky are criticized for their part in this fiasco and they are tasked to bring John-117 and Cortana to justice. They acknowledge their mission and leave. The council asks the next witnesses to come in.
A couple of days ago, right after John-117 (Alexander Skarsgard) got a hold of Cortana, he was held by gunpoint by the rest of the Blue Team. Kelly-087 (Milla Jovovich) and Fred-104 (Kevin Durand) urge John to destroy Cortana once and for all. They plead to him not to insert her in his helmet, she’s corrupt and dangerous, but John’s desire to be reunited with her is too strong. He inserts her in his helmet. Cortana (Sarah Gadon) appears in front of him, flashing repeatedly, indicating she’s damaged and unstable. She tells him she’s glad to be back with him, where she belongs. She identifies Kelly and Fred as threats as they are slowly advancing towards John while he listens to her. She orders him to kill them, but John doesn’t want too. Fred tries to get Cortana out of John’s helmet, but John fights back. He activates Kelly’s armor constraint and she remains stuck in place. Fred puts up a good fight with John, but the latter gets the upper hand. Fred hangs on by a cliff and John has the choice to let him go or not. Fred begs him to let him live. Cortana orders John to let him go, but he can’t do it. He asks Fred to let him go, he knows what he’s doing and he agrees. Fred helps Kelly with her armor constraint and when they turn around, John is gone. Fireteam Osiris, led by Edward Buck (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) arrives and hold Blue Team at gunpoint. They ask them where John and Cortana went and they swear they don’t know. Holly Tanaka (Uzo Aduba) tries to contact him to no avail, while Buck and Jameson Locke (Morris Chestnut) arrest Fred and Kelly for their role in John’s escape.
Far away from Genesis, The Didact (Benedict Cumberbatch) summons the Guardians to help his cause. He rallies his troops, the Prometheans, that their time has come and they will seek revenge from the human race and the Covenants, for their previous defeat and this time, they will triumph. He gets a wave of approval from his generals and officially activates the Guardians.
Osiris is escorting Blue Team to their Pelicans to bring them back to Earth where they will be judged accordingly. They casually joke that they’ll end up in jail somewhere and will be forgotten, but it is no laughing matter when the huge structures known as the Guardians, on Genesis start to take off. They struggle to advance due to the powerful winds created by the Guardians’ movement. Some Prometheans, who were laying low on the Guardians start jumping down and land near Osiris. They open fire as they try to survive and leave the planet. In the chaos, Kelly, who’s under arrest, tries to run away from Osiris. Locke tries to grab her, but she eludes him. He throws his flashbang in her direction, blinding Kelly. The rest of Osiris is on their ship and waiting for Locke and Linda to leave before their inevitable demise. They are overflowed by Promotheans and Locke has Linda on his shoulders with Promotheans chasing them. Osiris guns them down and as soon as they are on the ship, they take off. The Guardians leave are all up in the air now and about to leave Genesis’ atmosphere. Osiris argues whether they should engage with the Guardians or just follow them. Holly tries to receive a word from the command center, but they can’t get anything. Edward Buck decides to go back to Earth and wait for a proper order. As the camera zooms in on a Guardian, we see John-117 standing tall on a Guardian.
Holly Tanaka now stands before the council. They ask her what she role she had in the mission and she says she’s a communication expert and a good markswoman too. She was brought along to bring back Cortana to Dr. Halsey for analysis and they also received orders to capture the Spartan John-117 and his team, composed of Kelly-087 and Fred-104 as they went MIA and refused to answer direct orders. They ask if they were successful and she says they haven’t. They located John-117 and his team on Genesis, but when they arrived, he wasn’t there anymore and they left. They ask her if she tried to initiate contact with him and she swears she did, but he didn’t answer back. They say it will be all for now and she tries to defend her team, saying they did their job correctly. They escort her out and call in the next witness.
The Didact stands tall on his main ship and looks at the planet in front of it. He uses the main communication channel to talk to his army and he tells them that they need to wait for the Guardians and then, they will avenge their defeat and get back at the Covenants for killing their fellows. They support him once again. He looks at a monitor and realises the Guardians are getting closer and closer, they will strike soon. He also notices an anomaly and asks a ship to find out what’s happening on that Guardian.
John connects Cortana to the Guardian’s main computer with the hopes that she will be able to tell him where they’re going. She struggles to stay connected to it as she’s more and more damaged and rampant. John tries to hype her up and encourage her and Cortana why he is still supporting her and fighting for her even when everyone thinks she’s gone crazy. He doesn’t know what to say so he just says that she’s been with him since the beginning and he won’t let her down. They’re going to end all of this together and then he will get her fixed. She says they probably won’t accept that and she will be retired, but John says they will have to step on his grave if they want to destroy her. Cortana tries to touch him, but she’s not able to. He asks her f she’s been able to learn their destination and she tells him they’re going to Sanghellios, home of the Covenants. John tries to contact his good friend and leader of the Covenants, the Arbiter, but as soon as he touches the radio, the Promethean ship the Didact sent arrives and he starts shooting at John on sight. Some Promethean jump down to try and kill John before he derails their plans once again and he hides from them, but not before retrieving Cortana and putting her back in his helmet.
John defends himself from the Prometheans, but he certainly knows he’s outnumbered and he won’t be able to defeat them all. He tries to retreat back to the main room, where he will be able to protect himself a bit more. He kills a bunch of enemies as he retreats and he’s nearly caught by one of their lasers. He barricades himself in the main room and tries to reload his gun, but he can’t find any ammo. Cortana appears before him, rapidly blinking. She warns John that there are several Prometheans coming for him and she says she can protect him if he plugs her in the computer. Cortana’s hologram through John’s helmet is beginning to fade and he asks her if she’s alright. She says it’s no time to chat and he inserts her in the main computer. His enemies are able to bust a door open and John is forced to take his magnum out to fight them. He quickly runs out of ammo and uses his body to fight them. He asks Cortana how long it will take and she urges him to get them out and close the door and she can engage the shutdown protocol. John fights the Prometheans tirelessly and he’s finally able to close the door. Tired, he sits on the floor, collecting his guns he dropped on the floor. He thanks Cortana for her help and she says there’s no time to rest and suggests him to hold on to something. She takes control of the Guardian and flips the Prometheans off it. She turns to face their ship and destroys it with one quick strike. John gets his balance back and he says the Guardian could be useful. He orders Cortana to contact the Arbiter but she says it’s too late. John looks around him and the Guardians, alongside the rest of the Promethean fleet have begun their assault against Sanghelios.
Thel’Vadamee (Ben Foster), otherwise known as the Arbiter, runs in his army’s base trying to rally everyone. They were taken by surprise by the Prometheans and at the worst time possible, as they were still licking their wounds from their previous wars against the Jul’Mdama’s heretics. It is hard to motivate the troops and Thel’Vadamee is seen helping injured soldiers putting on their gear. Some are even struggling to carry their guns. A soldier pleads Thel’Vadamee to stay here, but he forces him to head out. The remaining ships head out to space, with little hope of coming back. They don’t know how to defeat a Guardian and they are heavily outnumbered. He looks up to the sky and he sees the numerous Guardians invading his home world as he hears the explosions and the devastation they bring with them.
John-117 is pacing inside his Guardian, pleading Cortana to find a way to fully take control of it to help the people of Sanghelios. She intercepts a signal coming from the surface, intended for somewhere else, but she steals the signal, preventing it from raching its original destination. It’s the Arbiter pleading for help. He asks for the best of the best to help save his planet. John believes his old friend is calling for his help. Cortana confirms that she has taken control of the Guardian. John says to be careful as he will jump down there to help the Arbiter and he doesn’t know how, but he’ll come back for her. Cortana wishes him luck and after John jumps down, Cortana decides to destroy the message instead of sending its intended destination. She turns red and turns back to blue in an instant. She blinks rapidly and starts to faint. She remembers John’s words of encouragement from earlier and takes full control of the Guardian. John-117 free falls on Sanghelios’ surface, in the middle of a battlefield, he looks around and heads to the Covenant’s side.
Far away from Sanghelios, Edward Buck, Jameson Locke and Holly Tanaka deliver Kelly-087 and Fred-104 to their superiors, Sarah Palmer (Sophie Turner) and Thomas Lasky (Allen Leach). They are put in a room where they are tied to chairs and officially put under arrest. Thomas Lasky reminds them of their rights and what will happen to them. Since they were officially AWOL and they conspired with John-117 to retrieve Cortana after she was declared a threat, they will be accused of treason. Sophie asks Osiris if they saw John with them and they say they didn’t. She asks them where he could have escaped and they say they saw a bunch of huge structures they call Guardians and he may have been on one of them for all they know. She asks them if they tried to chase him and Locke says they could have, but they would have winded up dead. When she asks why, Holly asks Palmer if she received their transmission when they saw the Guardians take off, but she says she hasn’t received anything, although she is mad that they flew away from a potential galactic threat in the Guardians and now, they have no way of knowing where they were headed.
The Arbiter put on his armor and grabbed his plasma guns and he heads out to the battlefield. He stands on top of a hill that allows him to see everything. He notices the Promethean forces are drawn to a certain spot in the war zone and he wonders what’s happening over there. He grabs his guard’s sniper and sees John hiding behind a rock and gunning down Prometheans. He asks his chiefs to converge and meet John to give him an advantage. Thel’Vadamee has to deck for cover after a sniper barely misses him.
As the Covenant army desperately tries to defend its home world against the invaders, the Master Chief is out there teaching the Prometheans a lesson, shooting them left and right. He throws grenades right back at them and uses both his guns at the same time with an incredible prevision, it’s no surprise given that he’s the best marksman in the galaxy. Not far away from John’s position, the Didact steps on Sanghelios’s soil. He’s attacked by Covenant forces, but he kills them almost instantly with a pin-point precision. He asks his bodyguard what’s the situation and they seem to have under control, although they face unexpected resistance at a hot point on the battlefield, referring to John’s location. The Didact asks them to protect him, he’ll go see what it’s about. Right after he says that, a Guardian is seen falling off the sky. The Arbiter wonders how they managed to destroy one and he asks his fleet for report. They say it seems like a Guardian turned against the other. Thel’Vadamee thanks Cortana, although she can’t hear him. He charges the battlefield, with the intention of winning this battle.
Around Sanghelios, Cortana keeps on destroying Guardians and so far, she hasn’t been detected by the others. She hears reports of cities being destroyed as the debris fall on the surface, but Cortana, continually blinking, doesn’t care and keeps on destroying Guardians.
The Didact realises what’s happening and he orders the Guardians to turn on Cortana’s. He marches down the battlefield with ease and he downs a group of Covenant with his weapons and his bodyguards’ help. John is still behind the huge rock, preventing the Prometheans from getting an easy access to him. Thel’Vadamee also progresses on the battlefield, but he’s starting to get desperate as his army is slowly diminishing. He feels like he’s in a war that he can’t win. Three more Guardians fall on Sanghelios’ surface, but Cortana’s is not in a good shape. She tries to contact John, but to no avail. She decides to keep fighting and whatever happens will happen. On the ground, Thel’Vadamee finally joins John and he asks him what he’s doing here. John says he’s simply defending the galaxy from a threat and Thel’Vadamee says they’ll be alright, he sent help across the galaxy. They stop talking and peek out to kill a bunch of Prometheans. The Arbiter asks John if he ever takes a day off and he says he doesn’t. They are happy to see each other, even if the circumstances aren’t the best. John finally receives a transmission from Cortana and she urges him to get back. With Cortana’s Guardian out of commission, the others attack Sanghelios again. John asks Thel’Vadamee how he can reach space in no time and he points to his space jump platform, not far away from here. John says he needs to save Cortana and Thel’Vadamee says he got his back They salute each other and John runs to the space jump platform. As he starts shooting to distract the Prometheans away from John, Thel’Vadamee is shot by the Didact. The Arbiter’s bodyguards extract him from the battlefield and retreat to his headquarters. His second-in-command looks at the battlefield and looks at the multiple reports all around the planet about cities being destroyed and regiments who’ve been killed. Thel’Vadamee is unconscious, they need to make a decision.
John jumped into space and uses his thrusters to reach Cortana’s Guardian. He dodges missiles and laser beams to reach his destination. He finally manages to get on it and he’s taken by surprise by Prometheans scavenging the Guardian, looking for Cortana. He engages in a gun fight with them in the exploding structure. He feels like the time is running out, so he runs in the command center and he grabs Cortana before jumping out of the Guardian and into the vast and dark space. John was hit numerous times by Prometheans during his last effort and he passes out with Cortana in his helmet. She tries to wake him up, to no avail. Behind him explosions are seen and heard, as Sanghelios is officially evacuated.
Edward Buck and Jameson Locke stand before the Council and they must answer questions about the failed mission to capture John-117 and Cortana. They retell the events leading up to them setting foot on Genesis with a surprising accuracy, as we see flashbacks of the previous film’s events. The Council wants to know if they understood something correctly. They ask if John-117 really engaged fire with Osiris team before they were about to capture him and he escaped and they say he did and so did the rest of Blue Team. They thank them for their time and call in their next witnesses.
The Didact stands over Covenants remains and addresses his troops. He says they achieve what they wanted today, but there’s still one last step they need ot make in order to exact their revenge on the galaxy who wronged them. His troops rally and get ready to leave a destroyed Sanghelios.
Thel’Vadamee awakens on his ship and he asks where he is. His confidants have no choice but to tell him they had to abandon their home, as it was completely destroyed by the Prometheans. They ignore how many ships were able to escape, but the assaults seemed to stop when they evacuated. Most of his army is dead, or MIA. They are currently on a path to nowhere, laying low until they know what to do. He looks outside and he sees the Guardians leaving with a fleet of Promethean ships following them. He asks if they know where they are going and they say they have no idea. He looks in front of him and he notices something gravitating with no clear path. They move closer and Thel’Vadamee recognizes John. They are able to bring him on board and as they put him down, John awakens. Cortana is screaming in his helmet, saying the Prometheans are going to hit the Earth next. He tells it to Thel’Vadamee, who, after hesitation, decides to go there immediately.
Sarah Palmer and Thomas Lasky were called to the stand, even if they think they did nothing wrong over the course of the operation. They do not feel like they are responsible for its failure and blame Osiris for failing the assignment. Instead of blaming them for them for the failed mission, the Council accuses them of something much worse, even more so because of their high ranks. It takes them by surprise and the Council blames for letting the Guardian, a potential intergalactic threat, escape and not following them. They did nothing about it. Lasky and Palmer don’t know what to answer. The silence is interrupted by John-117 barging into the room, getting the revolving doors our of their screws. The soldiers rise up and try to put him under arrest, but John refuses. He says a great threat is coming and he doesn’t know how much time he has before it’s too late. They ask him to explain further and he asks to speak with the highest-ranking official of the UNSC. Palmer and Lasky say they will escort him. A member of the Council rises, Chief of Staff Jun-A266 (Jason Statham)f, retired Spartan and veteran of the Reach battle. He says he will escort him. They can stay here in the meantime. Jun grabs John and doesn’t even bother to restrain him. John asks him to hurry up, it’s a real threat and it’s coming soon.
John and Jun enter Rear Admiral Musa Ghanem’s (Mark Strong) office and suffice to say, he was expected. To John’s surprise, Thel’Vadamee is already in the office and he just told him everything that happened on Sanghelios. Ghanem is surprised to hear that, because he didn’t receive any transmissions from Sanghelios asking for help. He says he just spoke with the command center and they haven’t spotted any incoming threat. Thel’Vadamee asks John to put Cortana on a console and he does. She blinks really fast and seems unstable. He asks her if what did she do with the Guardians and right as she’s about to answer, an explosion is heard, which breaks the windows in Ghanem’s office. John grabs Cortana from the console. The Guardians are here.
The Didact is in his ship and he orders the assault on Earth so they can finally avenge the ones who were killed before them. He goes down on the surface and he lands close to John and co. The Earth’s army was taken by surprise, but they are ready to fight. Before he leaves Musa’s office, John asks if he can use the cannon. Musa forbids him from using the cannon, but John says he’ll have to stop him himself for that to happen, it’s the only way. Thel’Vadamee, still injured, lays low. At the Council hearing, Palmer and Lasky regain their consciousness, the first strike was right on the building they were in. They head out the building and Palmer puts on her SPARTAN armor. John dashes through the war zone, forcing himself not to distracted by anything. He sees Kelly and Fred who were liberated to fight alongside the UNSC. The Didact sees and recognizes John. He tries to shoot him, but can’t seem to hit the target. John gets on a Falcon ship, stealing it from Marines and flies away.
Palmer and Lasky do their best to organize the defense, but it seems like the Prometheans are all over the globe, destroying everything in sight. The battle is fast-paced and the death toll is growing significantly. About 30 miles away, in another city, John lands his Falcon near the newest addition to the UNSC’s arsenal. It’s a powerful cannon that feeds off the nearby energy to create a powerful blast and nothing should resist it. Cortana advises John to do this, but he says they should evacuate the city first. She says there’s no time. Musa is looking for John on the battlefield and when he can’t find him, he orders the city to evacuate before he uses the cannon he specifically forbid him to use. John inserts Cortana in the cannon and she asks him to wait for him to come back before launching, he needs to warn people about it so they aren’t instantly killed by the blast.
John runs to the city and he tries to get people to evacuate the city. He guns down Prometheans, but panic has settled in and he can’t get everyone’s attention. Cortana, in the cannon, asks John to forgive him and activates the cannon. John senses the cannon starting to feed off the energy and he hides in a nuclear shelter, hoping it would spare him. The camera focuses on the cannon. It fires a powerful blast that kicks off a chain reaction, destroying all the Guardians. The remaining Promethean ships are also destroyed, only the ones on the surface remain.
Post-Credit Scene : As the camera travels around the devastated city, with the war still ongoing everywhere else, multiple humans lay on the ground, dead. Some buildings were destroyed too. In the silence of the city, a rattling is heard. The nuclear shelter’s door opens and John crawls out, without his helmet, looking at the desolation all around him.
