Reaction: While we were hoping for bigger numbers out of Denzel Washington's first appearance, we can't complain too much about the profit the film managed to earn. That said, it still would've been nice to see more of a profit with a box office gross over $90 million.
"It takes way too long for Denzel's face to grace the screen, but once it does the film finally gets moving along after a slow and predictable beginning. He gives a strong performance in his LRF debut, stretching his dramatic acting muscles in a cool fashion." - Olive Carroll, Houston Chronicle
"Bastion is many things, but subtle it is not. The racism and the time periods don't feel very authentic - if the film had been a period piece, this aspect would probably have worked a lot better." - Jeremy Raren, RottenTomatoes.com
"I have mixed feelings when it comes to Bastion. It is well-plotted and well-cast, but it is often too heavy-handed in its approach to its subject matter. Obviously the performances are strong, especially from Washington and Phoenix, but then you have Goodman as the cartoonishly racist villain. At the end of the day though, the positives do outweigh the negatives." - Allen Poole, AV Club
