Reaction: Ridley Scott's first film for LRF managed a decent profit thanks to strong numbers overseas. The domestic box office numbers were a little disappointing given the pedigree of the director and leading man, but we can't complain about a successful film.
"Given the pedigree of the cast and crew I had high hopes for the film. The majority of these hopes were not met by the final product. The character development was non existent, and no number of well-shot sword fights and naval battles can make up for that." - Chris Mears, Slashfilm
"The plot of the film is a little hokey, but let's face it - most people will be going to see this film for star Josh Brolin and director Ridley Scott. It's a successful team up, with Scott giving the film a sun-soaked look while Brolin delivers a charismatic and macho performance." - Ben Bernard, New York Times
"Man, it was great to see Josh Brolin back on the big screen after all these seasons. He brings a masculinity to the pirate film genre that hasn't really been seen before. The film is polished affair from director Ridley Scott and writer Matt Parker, adapting one of the final novels from writer Michael Crichton." - Sam Morris, Oregonian
