Plot:
Manhattan, New York.
The beautiful blue-skinned mutant Mystique (Rebecca Ferguson) walks through the underground parking lot of a Manhattan skyscraper. As she passes a security post, she morphs into a security guard and they let her past. Mystique then walks up the security post and takes out the guards. She then changes back to her usual image and opens up a gate, letting the grimy mutant Toad (Robert Sheehan), the beastly Sabretooth (Adam Copeland), and their regal leader Magneto (David Morrissey) into the structure). Magneto stands in the middle of the parking lot. He hold his arms out and the concrete around them begins to crumble, revealing the structure's steel frame. Magneto then magnetically manipulates the building's frame, first bending and twisting it, then finally lifting the building up into the air above them. Magneto moves the building out from over them, before letting go, sending the building crashing down in the middle of a street.  Toad hacks into the broadcast transmission of the evening news, allowing Magneto to take credit for the building's destruction on behalf of his Brotherhood and all of mutant-kind. They are sick of being persecuted and belittled by those weaker than them. Mutants are the next form of evolution, and humans better get out of their way or the toppling of a skyscraper will merely be the tip on the iceberg of destruction mutants like him can bring upon the human world if they so choose.

Washington, D.C.
Senator Kelly Roberts (Brenda Strong) announces the passage of the Mutant Registration Act, which will require all mutants to registered and monitored by the government. Before the press she announces that the US government does not negotiate with terrorists, mutant or otherwise. She says that if what the terrorist who calls himself Magneto says is true, then it is more important than ever that the governments of the world unite in order to protect themselves from dangerous mutants across the globe. The audience loudly cheers following the senator's remarks.

Deerfield, Illinois.
Kitty Pryde (Millie Bobby Brown) hears her parents talking about submitting her for the Mutant Registration Act. They agree that going along with the government order will be for Kitty's good in the long run. Kitty begins crying as she overhears this conversation. Kitty then phases her body through a wall and begins yelling at her parents for only thinking about themselves and not asking her what she wants. In the middle of the night, Kitty packs a bag and then walks through her bedroom wall. She begins running down the street trying to hold back her tears.

North Salem, New York.
Deep in the basement levels beneath the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning, the furry, blue Hank McCoy a.k.a. Beast (David Oyelowo) swings upon metal bars dodging beanbags fired in his direction. The telekinetic and telepathic Jean Grey (Jessie Buckley) continues mentally flinging the bean bags at Beast until he gets to the end of an obstacle course. She then sends dozens of clay pigeons flying toward Scott Summers / Cyclops (Jamie Dornan), who fires red laser blasts out of his visor, hitting each and every one of the projectiles fired in his direction. Charles Xavier (Toby Stephens) then enters the room on his electric wheelchair and commends them on their training. Cyclops is hard on himself, saying that he thinks he can do better. Xavier says that the time for training is over and it now a time for action. Between the actions of Magneto and his Brotherhood and the passing of the Mutant Registration Act, they very well may need to fight for their lives in the immediate future.

Kitty Pryde shows up at the steps of the Xavier Institute. She is unsure of what to do, when Jean Grey walks up to her and asks her if she is looking for a safe place. Kitty nods her head. Jean smiles and tells her that the school is the right place for her as there are many young people just like her here at the school. Jean tells her that it wasn't too long ago that she too found herself on the front steps of the school waiting for a safe place where she could be herself and not hide her special abilities. Kitty asks Jean what her powers are, and Jean telepathically tells her that she can read people's minds and send them messages as well as moving things with her mind as she picks up some nearby stones and stacks them with her mind. Kitty is impressed. Jean asks Kitty what she can do, and Kitty says she can walk through walls and stuff. Jean guides Kitty inside and introduces her to Xavier.

Brooklyn, New York.
Senator Roberts' helicopter lands at the Brooklyn Naval Yards. She is then led into a top secret research facility. She is introduced to the head of the Sentinel program, Bolivar Trask (William Fichtner). He takes her around and shows her what they have been up to, and leads her to a row of 20-foot-tall robots. She asks what they're made out of since she's heard there are mutants that can control metal with their mind. Trask assures her that won't be an issue with his Sentinels since they are made out of carbon fibers and non-magnetic metals.

Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Logan (Zach McGowan) takes an elevator up to the penthouse floor of a high rise. He walks up to a door where he is patted down by guards. A man behind a desk reminds the guards to use the metal detector as these are dangerous times. The man behind the desk says that he hopes Department H wouldn't try to send an armed gunman to take him out. The metal detectors start squealing. The man pulls out a gun and demands Logan hand over the weapon he brought. Logan chuckles and says that he didn't bring any weapons - he is the weapon. Retractable metal claws emerge from Logan's hands. He quickly dispatches the guards and then lunges at the man behind the desk. Logan tells the man that the government looks down on treason, then stabs the man in the chest with his claws. Logan wipes his claws off on the man's suit, retracts his claws, and calmly leaves the building.

After another Danger Room training session, Cyclops meets with Xavier and tells him that if they are indeed going to be going to war they really should have someone with them who has experience with that sort of thing, since all the combat simulation training in the world is not the same thing as actual tactical combat experience. Xavier agrees and says that he used his Cerebro device to locate just such a mutant who works for the Canadian government. Xavier tells Cyclops to ready the Blackbird for a flight to Canada.

Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Logan is meeting with his Department H superior James Hudson (Mike Myers) in the Department H underground headquarters, deep beneath Parliament Hill. Hudson tells Logan, who he refers to as Wolverine, that he has a stack of wetwork assignments from his superiors if he wants something to do. Logan says he wants the opposite and quits. Hudson is taken aback by Logan's declaration, saying that they both know that Logan's best trait is his killing ability. Logan says that he's fed up with government work and tells Hudson that if he wants people killed, he should probably call up Victor Creed. As Logan walks out of the office, Hudson sighs and comments that the prime minister isn't going to like this.

That night, Logan is sitting in his cabin in the Ontario wilderness, smoking a cigar when bright lights emerge in a nearby clearing. The lights vanish and then Logan hears foot steps in the brush. Logan charges toward the steps, tackling the person - who turns out to be Cyclops. Logan has his claws ready to strike, when suddenly he is pulled up into the air by psionic energy. Xavier and Jean Grey emerge from the darkness and tell Logan they mean him no harm, in fact they have come to request his assistance. Logan takes a look at Jean Grey and agrees to chat. Cyclops gets up and brushes himself off. Xavier tells Logan that a war not only between human and mutant is on the way, but it will also end up pitting mutants against each other as well - all of humanity is at sake. Logan says he isn't interested in fighting any more wars. Cyclops says they should go since he's clearly a lost cause at this point.

Senator Roberts is on a helicopter flying to a hearing back in Washington when the pilot notices that there is another chopper approaching from behind them. The other helicopter is piloted by Toad and Magneto. Magneto tells him to get a little closer, then Magneto using his powers to crunch the senator's helicopter like a ball of paper. The helicopter then falls out of the sky and lands in the forest below. Henry Gyrich (Brett Cullen) arrives at the scene of the senator's helicopter crash in the morning. Gyrich orders the plane and all of its pieces loaded up on a truck and brought to the Brooklyn Naval Yards immediately.

Mystique approaches the Brooklyn Naval Yards by car. Once she gets to the security, she transforms herself into Senator Roberts and they usher her into the facility. Trask is surprised to see Roberts again so soon, but Mystique tells him that the president asked her to take one last look at the facility before the Sentinels are sent out into the world. Trask assures her that his creations are ready and that the Sentinels should have no trouble finding and capturing any and all mutants so that they can be registered with the government. Trask flips a switch with glee, activating the Sentinels. One of the giant robots senses a nearby mutant and starts marching toward Roberts and Trask. The Sentinel opens fire, and Mystique switches back to her normal form and makes her escape from the facility.

James Hudson finds Logan in the woods and says that the higher-ups need him to check in on an asset for them: Victor Creed. Logan asks what part of retired does Department H not understand. Hudson says that the asset is the one who actually requested the meeting with Logan. The DH higher-ups are merely interested in what transpires. Later that day, Logan sits across from Creed aka Sabretooth in a New York steak house. Logan begrudgingly sits across from Creed and asks what he wants. Sabretooth, while eating a completely raw steak, offers Logan a position in the Brotherhood. Logan declines. There is clearly a long history of animosity between the two mutants. Logan glares at Sabretooth and extracts his claws. Sabretooth smiles, bloody steak hanging out of his mouth, and throws the table into the air. Logan lunges at Sabretooth, stabbing him in the shoulder. Sabretooth scratches Logan across the face with his claws. Logan's face rapidly heals. Sabretooth throws a table at Logan, who slices it in half with his claws. Magneto emerges from the shadows of the restaurant and tells Logan that he should have joined. Magneto uses his powers to pin Logan against a wall. He tells Sabretooth that he can finish his fight with the Wolverine later. They have more pressing matters to attend to currently than to kill old vendettas. Sabretooth reluctantly leaves the restaurant with Magneto. Once Magneto is clear from the area, Logan falls to the ground.

Beast is in his living quarters reading Shakespeare - while hanging upside down - when an alarm blares through the X-Mansion. Jean Grey and Cyclops are teaching a class at the time and lead the students, including Kitty Pryde, through a secret corridor and into a safe room. They tell the students to stay put while they go find out what's going on, locking the safe room door behind them. Kitty decides to walk through the door and follow them from a distance. In the basement of the mansion, Cyclops and Jean Grey suit up. Xavier's voice appears in their head, telling them that the intruder has entered the mansion through the front entrance. Kitty phases her way through the walls and to the front steps. Logan is sitting there, and sense someone behind him. He stabs the person behind him with his claws. It turns out to be Kitty, and luckily the claws have phased through her, leaving Kitty unharmed. Beast, Cyclops and Jean Grey all head to the front of the mansion where they find Logan and Kitty. Logan asks if they're going to be fighting Magneto. Xavier rolls into the room on his wheelchair and confirms.

Following the announcement of the death of Senator Roberts at the hands of evil mutant terrorists, Bolivar Trask is given the green light to release the Sentinels and let them begin rounding up mutants. Xavier watches on the news as the giant robots begin flying over New York City, capturing mutants and tagging them. Xavier tells the others that this isn't going to end well for anyone. Xavier turns to Cyclops and asks if he's ready to lead the team into combat, Cyclops nods.

Staten Island, New York.
After hearing of the announcement, Magneto hovers on a metal disc high above Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island. He uses his powers to sink all of the bridges to Staten Island into the water. Magneto then has Toad hack into the broadcast signal to put out his own broadcast. Magneto welcomes all mutants to join him and his Brotherhood on Staten Island as a safe haven for mutant-kind. There they will be able to live without persecution. Magneto then takes a moment to tell all non-mutants that for their own livelihood, he suggests they board any boat or ferry they can find and leave the island at once.

Bolivar Trask directs the Sentinels to go to Staten Island to capture Magneto and his Brotherhood, telling Gyrich that it will be like shooting fish in a barrel. The Sentinel march from the Brooklyn Naval Yard toward the Verrazzano Bridge. Along the way they tag various mutants they pass with tracking devices. When they get to the location of the now-submerged Verrazzano Bridge, the Sentinels activate their thrusters and fly across the gap, landing at Fort Wadsworth.

Xavier gathers the team: Cyclops, Beast, Jean Grey and Logan in the underground hangar holding the Blackbird jet. He wishes them luck and assures them that he will be with them telepathically through the use of his Cerebro device. Cyclops tells everyone to board the jet. Before they leave, Beast confides in Xavier that he is worried about the mission. He doesn't think Cyclops is ready to lead a team into combat and he is concerned about a loose cannon like Logan tagging along for the ride. Xavier tells Beast that he has the utmost faith in the team they have put together. Besides, Xavier points out that Beast will be there alongside them to keep things in order.

Magneto and the Brotherhood stand atop Fort Wadsworth, watching as the Sentinels march toward the structure. Magneto tries to move them, but discovers that the robots are not made of metal. Magneto hurtles fences, cars, street signs, any and all metal objects in the vacinity toward the Sentinels, but they are able to blast the objects away and continue marching. Magneto asks Sabretooth, Toad and Mystique if they're ready for a fight.

Beast pilots the X-Men's Blackbird jet, landing it between the Sentinels and the Brotherhood. Logan comments that it doesn't seem like a good parking spot, and Beast tells him that if he learns how to pilot a jet he can pick the parking spot. Cyclops leads Beast and Jean Grey off of the plane. Logan senses something on the jet and pulls open a compartment, to reveal Kitty Pryde hiding. Logan asks her what she's up to, and she tells him that she just wants to help.

With the Sentinels and the Brotherhood on either side of them, the X-Men get to fighting. Logan charges at a Sentinel in a rage. He tears into it with his claws, slicing into pieces one limb at a time. He then finishes the robot off by stabbing it in the head with his claws. Amidst the destruction around them, Logan and Sabretooth spot each other and begin charging at one another.

Beast athletically begins climbing a Sentinel. The robot begins flying up off the ground trying to shake the blue mutant off. Beast gets all the way to the head of the Sentinel and begins ripping out cords and gears. He finally manages to rip the entire head off the Sentinel, sending it crashing into the ground.

Cyclops tries to take out a Sentinel with a laser blast, but the giant robot deflects the blast back at him, forcing him to dodge his own powers. Jean tells him that she thinks she can help. She then uses her powers to hold the Sentinel still. This allows Cyclops to blast it without it being able to deflect the laser blast. He uses his laser blast to severe the giant robot in half.

Toad sneaks into the X-Men's Blackbird jet to try to steal it. He sits down behind the controls, but Kitty comes up behind him and hits him over the head with a fire extinguisher, knocking him unconscious. She then ties him up and runs out of the jet, excited to join the fight.

Wolverine and Sabretooth fight through the corridors of the fort. They slice at each other with their respective claws, but both rapidly heal from their regenerative powers. Their fight is very evenly matched. The fort begins falling apart from the battle around it, with Wolverine and Sabretooth eventually being seemingly trapped by the rubble when the ceiling above them comes down on top of them.

Magneto is sending cars flying all over the place trying to hit the X-Men with them. Beast, Cyclops and Jean have all taken cover behind a destroyed Sentinel. Cyclops says that if someone could somehow distract Magneto, he could get close enough to hit Magneto with his one of his optic laser beams. Beast comes out of the cover, but is quickly hit by metal debris hurled by Magneto.

Jean Grey tells Cyclops to stay next to her and she can get them closer. She creates a psionic force field around Cyclops and herself. Magneto hurls a car at them, but the car crumples against Jean's force field. Kitty Pryde, having overheard the X-Men's conversation about distracting Magneto, runs right at Magneto. He tries to stop her by wrapping metal fencing around her, but she phases right through it. While he is distracted by Kitty, Cyclops steps out of Jean's psionic force field and fires a laser blast at Magneto, incapacitating him and sending him flying off the roof of the destroyed fort.

The X-Men re-group at the Blackbird where they see the tied up Toad. Beast asks who did it, and Kitty emerges with her hand raised. Cyclops asks if anyone has seen Logan, but the last time anyone saw him was when he went into the now destroyed fort to fight Sabretooth. Cyclops asks about Magneto and Mystique, but no one has been able to find either of them.

Back at the Xavier Institute, Cyclops, Jean and Beast report back to Xavier that Toad was apprehended and Sabretooth is presumed dead following a building collapse, but that Magneto and Mystique could not be located. Xavier tells that he knows this. He attempted to locate them via Cerebro, but has been able so far to pin point their location. Kitty walks through the wall, interrupting the meeting to ask when she gets her own uniform.

Cyclops and Jean sit in a courtyard at the school. She asks him what he is thinking about, and he jokes that she should already know. She tells him that they can train more in the Danger Room later and gives him a kiss.

At the Brooklyn Naval Yards, Mystique kills Trask and Gyrich in the lab. She then sets up several explosive devices in the building. She walks out and steps into a car where Magneto waits for her. They drive away as the building is engulfed by a massive explosion.
