The Roundup with Jeff Stockton (Season 15 Golden Reel Awards Edition)

Alrighty, folks. The nominees have been announced for the 15th Golden Reel Awards. For this awards-centric edition of The Roundup, I will go through each category and tell you who I think should win the award, who I think actually will win the award, and who I think has no chance to win - followed by a brief thought on the category this season.

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN
Who Should Win: Lady Red
Who Will Win: Halo 6
No Chance: Hotel California

Thought(s): I love the design and marketing materials for Lady Red, but I could definitely picture Halo 6 taking this award due to the longevity of the franchise.

BEST SOUNDTRACK

Who Should Win: And the Birds Rained Down
Who Will Win: Kurt & Courtney: All Apologies
No Chance: Misfit

Thought(s): The period soundtracks tend to get a lot of nominations but don't seem to end up winning, which obviously doesn't work in Misfit's favor. I enjoyed the soundtrack to And the Birds Rained Down, but Nirvana's music still has its fans so I'd bet that will win.

MOST WANTED SEQUEL
Who Should Win: X-Men
Who Will Win: X-Men
No Chance: Justice League Europe

Thought(s): I'm only saying that Justice League Europe has no chance at winning this award because it seems so obvious that it will get a sequel that voters may just skip past it. Dwight Gallo's X-Men did what seemed impossible, and successfully reinvented a long-running franchise, so I think it should and will win this one.

BEST ENSEMBLE CAST

Who Should Win: A Reputation
Who Will Win: And the Birds Rained Down
No Chance: X-Men

Thought(s):The cast/acting in A Reputation was top notch. Even if I wasn't a fan of Brie Larson in the film, the rest of the cast does solid work. That said, I'd put my money on And the Birds Rained Down since there was a lack of stars.

BEST STARRING COUPLE
Who Should Win: Chris Pine & Sam Rockwell - Of Rocks and Sand
Who Will Win: Christina Hendricks & Joaquin Phoenix - Misfit
No Chance: Ryan Gosling & Jennifer Lawrence - The Killings

Thought(s): This is a crazy strong category this season, so it could be anyone's game, but while I think the starring duo of Misfit will take home the award, I think that Pine and Rockwell earned it with their stellar work in Of Rocks and Sand.

BEST VILLAIN
Who Should Win: Noah Centineo - To The Max
Who Will Win: Mark Strong - Crimson
No Chance: Dustin Hoffman - A Reputation

Thought(s): I loved Mark Strong in Crimson, and he's certainly due for some GRA love, but Centineo was simply perfect as the dopey, aspiring teenage super villain in To The Max.

BEST ADAPTATION
Who Should Win: And the Birds Rained Down
Who Will Win: And the Birds Rained Down
No Chance: The Andromeda Strain

Thought(s): It is pretty rare that a best screenplay award is a film's only nomination, but that is what has happened with The Andromeda Strain, so I doubt it will win the award, which is clearly And the Birds Rained Down's award to lose.

BEST ORIGINAL STORY
Who Should Win: Of Rocks and Sand
Who Will Win: Of Rocks and Sand
No Chance: The Killings

Thought(s): Of Rocks and Sand is probably my favorite film of the season, so I not only think it will win I think it should win the award.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Who Should Win: Grace Van Patten - Of Rocks and Sand
Who Will Win: Isabelle Huppert - And the Birds Rained Down
No Chance: Lili Reinhart - Constantine: The Hellblazer

Thought(s): Lili Reinhart was able to take advantage of a weak category to get a nomination here. Grace Van Patten gave my favorite female supporting performance this year, but Huppert will probably win.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Who Should Win: Chris Pine - Of Rocks and Sand
Who Will Win: George Clooney - Misfit
No Chance: Mahershala Ali - The Nickel Boys

Thought(s): Chris Pine gave my favorite performance in Of Rocks and Sand, so I really think he should win. That said, star power will probably win out in George Clooney's favor.

BEST ACTRESS
Who Should Win: Christina Hendricks - Misfit
Who Will Win: Riley Keough - Kurt & Courtney: All Apologies
No Chance: Charlotte Rampling - And the Birds Rained Down

Thought(s): I think Hendricks was pitch perfect as Marilyn Monroe and should definitely take home the award. Riley Keough had a pretty showy role as Courtney Love, and voters tend to eat that kind of stuff up.

BEST ACTOR
Who Should Win: Ben Foster - Kurt & Courtney: All Apologies
Who Will Win: Joaquin Phoenix - Misift
No Chance: Ryan Gosling - The Killings

Thought(s): Similar to Hendricks as Monroe, Ben Foster was absolutely perfectly cast as Kurt Cobain (age be damned). But similar to the Best Supporting Actor race, this one might come down to star power in the eyes of the voters.

BEST DIRECTOR
Who Should Win: Jean-Marc Vallee - And the Birds Rained Down
Who Will Win: Gus Van Sant - Misfit
No Chance: Noah Baumbach - A Reputation

Thought(s): And the Birds Rained Down is really a showcase for Vallee's ample directorial talents. Van Sant directed the higher-profile cast, and that generally has some say with the voters. The lack of nominations in other major categories definitely spoils Baumbach's chances.

BEST PICTURE
Who Should Win: Of Rocks and Sand
Who Will Win: Misfit
No Chance: Crimson

Thought(s):The only film with no chance is Crimson. I would not be surprised if any of the other three films takes home the Best Picture award. I want it to be Of Rocks and Sand, but the film may be too strange for some voters, so something more traditional like Misfit probably has a better chance at the award.
