Reaction: With the low costs and the less than marketable cast, box expectations for this drama were not super high. That said, the film exceeded expectations, becoming Jean-Marc Vallee's first profitable film for the studio since The Child Martyr back in Season 2.
"And the Birds Rained Down is certainly a low-key film that is only going to appeal to those in the right mood for a contemplative, personal drama. But if the mood does strike, you are in for a wonderful dramatic film." - Gillian Donaldson, Variety
"The latest collaboration between director Jean-Marc Vallee and writer Mo Buck, and the first not starring Brie Larson, makes tremendous use of its older cast. The older character actors that lead the cast imbue their characters with a life lived." - Stephen Ridley, Boston Globe
"I would argue that this is the best Vallee/Buck collaboration yet. This time they have combined to tell a simple story, but it is so full of real humanity and real emotion that you forget all about any plot there is, and instead focus on what the characters are feeling." - Leslie Vandergort, Minneapolis Star Tribune
Rated R for language, sexual references and some drug content.
