Welcome back for another edition of A Second Look with Jeff Stockton! In this segment I will take a "second look" at a past LRF release with a fresh set of eyes.
With Batman Beyond out in theaters this round, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at LRF's first "Bat-film", Batman: Gotham Knight. Just the fifth film in the studio's DC Comics Universe, it has always kind of been the black sheep of the Batman series, grossing less than half of the latter two films in the series. When I initially reviewed Batman: Gotham Knight, I thought it was a decent new take on Batman for film. The action was exciting, and Jake Gyllenhaal was good in the title role. The villain department left something to be desired outside of Caleb Landry Jones' Joker though, but I thought it was a mostly solid film.
In my "second look" at Batman: Gotham Knight, the film felt a lot less focused than APJ's future Batman films, and Michael Pitt's Black Mask did not feel like the best villain for the film. Then you have the cavalcade of side-villains. Outside of Joker, the rest were pretty much duds. It definitely has some strong action scenes, but it is obvious that APJ has become a lot better writer since this film.
