Plot: The film begins with a TV on in a young boy’s bedroom as he is fast asleep. A news report states that police have been still searching for a missing girl by the name of Paula Polestar (Mckenna Grace). A loud thud is heard that wakes the boy, Ness (Winslow Fegley), up. He goes outside to investigate the noise, when Pokey, his neighbor, tells him it was a meteor and police aren’t letting anyone get close to it.

After some protest on letting Ness see the meteor with Pokey (Jeremy Ray Taylor), Ness' Mothershe agrees to let Ness go, citing that she can’t combat his adventurous spirit. Ness takes his trusty baseball bat and goes with Pokey to investigate the meteor.

When the police refuse to let the boys get closer to the meteor, they find a way to sneak around the police. Once they get close enough to the meteor, a beam of light shoots out of the meteor. The boys expect whatever is coming out of that beam to be giant, but it’s actually a bee. The bee, Buzz-Buzz (Jim Parsons) , identifies Ness as one of the boys from a prophecy, which states Ness, a girl and two other boys were going to save the destruction of the universe by Giygas. Pokey asks the bee if he is going to also be a hero, to which Buzz Buzz replies “No” this angers Pokey so much that he takes Ness’ bat and hits Buzz Buzz with it. Pokey storms off, leaving Ness to say goodbye to a dying Buzz Buzz.

While trying to sleep again, Ness starts seeing these disturbing images in his dream. In the midst of the disturbing dreams however, the form of a girl is calling out to him. What she says is broken up in the dream, but she says she is in Happy Happy Village.

Ness does just that, sneaks out of the house to head to Happy Happy Village, where Paula is being held captive by an insanely happy cult of people. The leader of the cult, Mr Carpainter (Paul Giamatti), is under the influence of a mysterious statue that appeared when the meteor came. Ness manages to destroy the statue and stops its control over Mr Carpainter.

He frees Paula, and the kids end up in a creepy town known as Threed. Threed is being terrorized by “zombies” but they aren’t the undead kind of zombies, just scary citizens of the town being controlled by an unknown force, perhaps Giygas trying to keep the kids from fulfilling the prophecy. Paula calls her parents to say she is safe and not to worry about her. She suggests to Ness that he should call his mother too, stating nothing beats hearing the soothing voice. Ness does, but the kids end up being caught by the zombies and left in an underground prison.

Paula uses her telepathy to try to call Jeff (JD McCrary). Jeff is a highly intelligent kid from the country of Winters. He lives at a boarding school and is often the butt of ridicule and bullying due to his high intellect and shyness. Jeff can hear the call, and sets out to run away from the boarding school and to his father (K. Todd Freeman), Dr Andonaut’s lab. Jeff explains that he needs to go to a place called Threed right away, stating that it’s his chance to do something bigger than himself. Andonauts allows Jeff to use his flying machine to get over to Threed. The Machine crashes through the roof of the underground prison for Ness and Paula.

We next learn about Po (Kim Ye Joon), who is a prince in a Kingdom. We learn that Po is well liked among his people, with many girls wanting to marry him; but his mind is more focused on his martial arts training known as Mu (Roger Yuan). While in deep focused meditation, his master in meditation form, causes great bodily harm, and no matter how painful it feels, Po must not wake up or he fails the lesson. Po passes the final lesson to be a Mu master. He is now ready to join Ness, Paula and Jeff to complete the foretold prophecy.

Throughout the film, the kids must traipse through sewers, caves and a deadly swamp. Ness also has plenty of visions of himself as a baby and discovering having strange psychic powers like Paula. Ness would eventually have to fight His Nightmare, which is a manifest of evil in Ness’ mind. Upon defeating his nightmare. Ness feels stronger, more confident and ready to fight Giygas.

The kids must then go to a place called Saturn Village, a quirky Village of strange looking beings. What the heck exactly are they? Nobody truly knows for sure. But the kids must meet Dr Andonauts at Saturn Village. He tells them he has a machine that will take them to Giygas, but they learn that Giygas is actually attacking from their precise location in the past; so the kids must travel to the past and destroy him.

We never actually see what Giygas actually looks like, just that he is the pure manifestation of evil represented by dark red and black colors. The kids are having a hard time fighting Giygas, they also learn that Pokey is possessed by Giygas’ control. Pokey reiterates that it’s hopeless for them, and that they should go home.

Paula gets the idea to pray, calling upon EVERYONE in the world to give them strength and destroy Giygas. While the kids note that it’s working and that they still need more, Paula looks directly at the camera, breaking the 4th wall and asking the audience to give them the strength to destroy Giygas.

And then, Giygas is finished and all is well with the world again. Jeff and Po return home, Ness takes Paula back to her home in Twosome. And before she leaves, she gives him a quick cheek-kiss, telling him not to be a stranger.

Ness rides a bike home, only for his mother to welcome him home and saying there is a steak waiting for him.
