Plot: We begin with Tom (Alex Wolff) a talented writer at a theatre. An award ceremony is going on at his school. Some people at the school are a part of a fundamentalist church run by a charismatic man named Jim Johnson (Jim Carrey). During the ceremony someone whispers to Tom to come and hang out at the church. They explain to Tom however that it is not just a church but that it’s where lonely teens can find refuge. He agrees to go after the ceremony.
The ceremony has finished and Tom arrives at the church, he enters and a few familiar faces from school is there. As he walks further into the church he sees Jim Johnson. Jim locks eyes with him and smiles, he walks toward Tom and sticks out a hand for a shek, he welcomes Tom to the Church of Johnson. Johnson explains the ideology of the church. The ideology turns out to be one of hate, racism, sexism and homophobia. He also adds that the people in this gathering are the chosen ones. Jim then says that the event tonight is a huge one.
Tom is very scared about what will happen, but is relieved about it when Jim offers him a ride home. On the ride home Jim talks about how Jesus would not like the wickedness of America today. Tom asks him his position on drugs and Jim tells him that he’s neutral on it.
Tom gets a text saying the event will finally rid the world of the wicked. Tom doesn’t respond and asks his father, Sam (Ron Livingston) to lock all the doors and make sure no one comes in. They get knocks on the doors and Tom realizes his dad is gone. Tom then looks out the window and sees his dad on a crucifix. The threat continues when Jim Johnson says they must sacrifice someone in order for Toms father for be set free. Jim Johnson even offers to cover up the murder. Tom then calls his friend, Jared (Lucas Jade Zumann) decides to kill the girl that broke Tom’s heart, Elena (Harley Quinn Smith). Tom does not want to do it but he agrees.
They then go to the Elena’s house and Jared then motions Tom to do it finally and Tom is shaking. Jared then gives him the gun. Tom shoots Elena. The next morning he says the feeling of the kill was the best feeling in the world but he also starts feeling guilty. One of the church members reveals that he has DNA of another member of the school as he once beat him up and he took his blood. They then pore the blood onto the scene. The school is mourning the loss of the girl, Elena. Every one of her friends is mourning. There is an assembly about her death. One of Elena’s best friend Abigail (Lily-Rose Depp) thinks that Tom did it but none of the authorities believe her and some of the members of the church shame her and bully her.
The student is getting falsely accused of the murder as his blood was on the scene. Tom meets with the church and the church congratulates him. They do a ceremony where they pray for him and pray for God to protect him. The whole Church of Johnson go to a pizza place after the ceremony. Tom is offered a drink and takes it. Tom and the rest of the church go out and they party, smoke weed and take other drugs and have a grand old time. The church asks Tom to write a manifesto, after hours of writing it he is finished and publishes it online.
The next day the church have the craziest idea, they want to bomb the school, as Jim convinced them the school is wicked. Jim plants the bomb under the school, he stands next to it and tells all of the Church of Johnson that he is going now, they must continue his legacy, the bomb goes off, killing everyone at the school. It makes the national news (obviously). Many of the church is arrested except for Tom, however he still feels guilty.
The next day Tom goes to a restaurant, the waitress brings out his meal and a knife and fork. Tom heads into the bathroom carrying the knife. A man walks in so Tom decides to have the rush one last time, he stabs him over and over again, before stabbing himself. Leaving him dead in a restaurant toilet.
