"The tone, imagery, Jennifer Kent's direction and Tom Hardy's commitment in the lead role make this film worth watching even if the plotting is a bit jumbled. Clearly the filmmakers were having a blast depicting Hardy's evolution as a pirate, but they forgot to give the story goals, stakes and urgency. When Benicio del Toro shows up toward the end as a villainous pirate, it comes out of nowhere - and not in a good way. It's still a good film, but it could have tackled some writing elements better." - Mark Brown, Austin American-Statesman
"Tom Hardy gives yet another remarkable performance, shouldering the movie nearly single-handedly. However, the true standout is Jennifer Kent, demonstrating her versatility as a filmmaker. While the film will likely receive GRA recognition, its occasional sluggishness didn't fully captivate me. Although there are worse ways to pass the time, I prefer something more engaging than this film's deliberate pacing." - Ayan Goldman, The Commercial Appeal
"Jennifer Kent steps out of her psychological thriller comfort zone to craft a well shot historical action film set during the swords and wood period of ocean piracy. Thorne Barclay, played by Tom Hardy as his Tom Hardiest, is the man who rises up the ranks of ship captain. Often brutal at times, it is a spectacle of action with little in the way of plot, so if that's up your alley, you may have a pretty good time. Jimmy Ellis started the narrative with a strong cannon blast, but I felt as if the film ran out of ammo toward the end." - Sherman J. Lovitz, USA Today
Rated R for strong violence and some sexuality
