Reaction: Writer Wyatt Allen is thankfully back with a profitable film after the losses suffered by Ruthersville, Brazil last season. It's also nice to finally see Jesse Eisenberg with a successful LRF project (more on that in this round's Box Office Breakdown).

"This is a film that feels in very steady hands with Spike Jonze behind the camera, who creates an unsettling atmosphere through his own brand of peculiarity. The film's meta-ness often works in its favor but, given its potential, things did end up feeling a little too safe for my tastes." - Reggie Coscarelli, San Fernando Valley Sun

"The movie crafts an intriguing storyline, yet it fails to elicit a connection due to its shallow exploration of themes. Eisenberg's performance is not poor, nor is his character, however, they both lack the depth required to forge an emotional investment. The film is not terrible, but it falls short of achieving greatness it had potential for." - Sara Karlsson, Willamette Week

"By the end I was a little unsure of how much - if any - existed in the head of the title character. That ambiguity may have been the point though, and it aided tremendously by the unraveling performance Jesse Eisenberg gives. He really does excel at playing these sorts of characters - the character who would be an 'every man' type if he weren't just a tad bit off. Spike Jonze's direction maintains that same slightly off quality throughout the entire film, making that seems ordinary on paper feel more unique." - Dave Manning, Ridgefield Press

Rated R for strong language, violence and some sexual content
