Welcome back for another edition of A Second Look with Jeff Stockton! In this segment I will take a "second look" at a past LRF release with a fresh set of eyes.
Cleopatra has a big role in the trilogy capper Caesar Part III, but LRF first featured Cleopatra in her own film back in Season 7 starring Gal Gadot. Directed by Guy Ritchie, the film received slightly, albeit mostly mixed, positive reviews from critics but flopped at the box office. It was the only film from writer Billy Rimmel, who disappeared from LRF following the film's poor box office performance. My thoughts on the film at release were that Gadot was pretty decent in the title role (at least better than I was expecting), but the film was not particularly well-directed by Guy Ritchie.
Looking at Cleopatra again, and I see a very dull film. It's not terribly long, but it sure feels like it. It lacks personality and liveliness. Gadot isn't terrible in the role, but she doesn't do a lot (and was certainly less convincing than I remembered). Likewise, Michael Fassbender and Eric Bana give stiff, uninterested performances as Antony and Caesar. This film was not as good as I remembered, and now pales immensely in comparison to Caesar Part III.
