Earth has become inhabitable due to chemical warfare 10 years prior. Now portions of humanity reside on different ships across the galaxy. The hope for inhabitable life is their only driving goal in this vast space of stars.
On the Skeld, captain Nick Bryant (Richard Madden) checks in with their pilot and his wife Carolyn (Evan Rachel Wood). They discuss the pressure that has been getting on the crew over the prolonged period in space. Walking through the halls Nick stops in the weapons room and checks on Vincent Cook (Michel Huisman), the lead weapons specialist. With the weapons all in perfect condition he visits Dr. Logan Miller (Lee Pace) and his assistant Athina Meza (Nathalie Emmanuel) in the medbay. Logan complains to Nick about the electrical problems. Nick pats his friend on the shoulder and tells him he’ll take care of it. Nick walks towards the electrical room, greeting storage workers Allen Robertson (Jerome Jharrel) and Charles Silva (Logan Lerman), the youngest members of the crew. Inside electrical Nick finds the head engineer Danielle Henley (Gemma Chan) hard at work on the flickering lights. Above them, a camera rotates and points down at Nick who waves.
Inside the security room, Arjun Sharma (Dev Patel) waves back before bringing two fresh cups of coffee to Edward Choi (Randall Park) and Emilia Kennedy (Dominique McElligot), scientists in charge of guarding the ship's reactor. Within the cafeteria Carolyn pushes a red button, summoning the crew to the cafeteria. When the entire crew has gathered Carolyn shows them a hologram of an abandoned planet by the name of Polus. She believes it has the potential to harbor breathable air and believes they should set down and explore it. The crew looks toward Nick who ponders the potential planet. He tells Carolyn to set them down and for a ground crew to gear up. While the crew leaves to gather supplies Carolyn and Nick stare at the hologram, the possibility of life looming in their heads.
Carolyn enters Polus's atmosphere with the Skeld, experiencing major turbulence on the way down. Over a loudspeaker, she announces to the crew that she can’t go any further due to the massive blizzard that orbits the planet. Nick gathers the ground crew composed of Vincent, Charles, Allen, and Emilia before heading to a landing pod. Nick tells his wife to stay on the coms before launching the pod to the surface. Landing down on the planet Nick and the crew turn on their lights, finding nothing in sight. The dark sky blocks the ground crew from spotting the Skeld in any capacity. Vincent groans and complains telling Nick his wife must have been a mistake, this doesn’t look inhabitable in the slightest. Nick sighs and tells Carolyn there must have been a mistake as they head back to the pod. Out in the distance, lights shine out into the sky gaining Nick’s attention. Despite some apprehension, the crew makes their way towards the light, finding what seems to be a facility down below them. Carefully sliding down a mountain Nick and everyone else enters the gated facility. What they find are mangled corpses spread throughout the outside, their blood staining the wall. They also find a message written in blood beside a headless body that reads “Trust No One.” Charles and Allen suggest leaving the area while Emilia pulls a gun from Vincent’s pocket. All of a sudden the lights in the facility go out sending the crew into a panic. A door opens into the base and with no other options the crew ventures inside. Finding more bodies along the way, their chests ripped apart from the inside Charles takes off his helmet to throw up. A voice from the shadows warns Charles the air is poisonous startling him. Nick pulls his gun and aims his light into the shadows finding an old man in a spacesuit walking toward them.
The mysterious stranger lifts up his visor and helps Charles to his feet. He introduces himself as Kenji Shimura (Hiroyuki Sanada) and he was the leader of a group of explorers stationed on Polus. During their time testing the planet for habitability, a disease spread throughout the camp, causing the crew to turn on each other. Kenji explains that he’s the only survivor, a claim Vincent doesn’t trust. With his gun drawn he urges Nick to leave him and head back. Despite his crewmate's complaints, Nick takes Kenji back to the ship, hoping to gain insight into the planets his crew had visited.
On the ship, Kenji is checked out by Athina and Miller while Emilia watches over them, a plasma rifle held in her hands. Miller scans Kenji’s chest and alerts him to the fact he has an anomaly within his chest. The old man explains it's most likely a heart condition.
In the pilot's deck, Carolyn and Nick eat dinner together and reminisce about their time as teenagers on Earth. Nick wishes they had more time to simply be teens instead of being thrust into such high positions. Carolyn agrees and hugs her spouse before heading off to bed, enabling the autopilot. Lower in the ship the rest of the crew gathers around a table to play cards. Arjun deals out the game and asks Charles the details about Kenji. Charles begins to speak but Allen cuts him off mid-sentence, telling Arjun the man gives him the creeps. Edward theorizes the man may have the knowledge they need to find a new home. Danielle laughs, poking fun that he’s getting replaced. Walking around the ship Nick finds Kenji out of his room and staring out into the stars from the navigating station. Nick smiles and comments on how beautiful the stars are in space and Kenji stays silent. He turns to Nick, blood flowing down his eyes as he begins to choke. Nick opens up the man's shirt and is splattered with blood when Kenji’s chest bursts open. Nick wipes the blood off his face and falls to the ground unconscious. In the air, a black smoke pulls itself out of Kenji’s body and looms over Nick.
Carolyn awakes in her bed to find Nick missing. Confused she throws on her shoes and walks around the ship, looking for him. In the security room, Arjun packs up the games when he spots something poking out behind a wall on the security feed. Turning to Carolyn’s private channel he asks her to meet him at the nav deck. Walking over to the deck she turns the corner, finding the mangled corpse of Kenji. The pilot holds in a scream and holds Arjun tight when he arrives on the scene. The two theorize what could have killed Kenji in such a way. Carolyn lets slip that Nick is missing and Arjun looks away, not wanting to face the possibility. Carolyn grabs Arjun and tells him to keep it secret. Nick is alive as far as the crew knows. As the two are talking the Skeld’s power mysteriously shuts off, leaving everyone in darkness. Groaning in her bed Danielle pulls off her covers and grabs a flashlight. Shining the light down the corridors Danielle grows paranoid, feeling she’s being watched from somewhere. Reaching the electrical room Danielle walks inside only to see Nick standing in front of the box. Confused she places her hand on Nick’s shoulder and asks if he’s okay. Frustrated that the power is still out while he was working on his research Edward heads down to the electrical room as well, determined to fix it himself. Shining a light at the box he finds Danielle standing there by herself, just staring at the box. Edward calls out to her and approaches her, shutting the door behind him. A blood-curdling scream echoes throughout the hallways awakening the rest of the crew. Everyone rushes to the electrical room just as the power to the ship turns back on. Inside a dazed and confused Danielle stands over Edward, his body leaning against the wall eyes gouged out. Without any hesitation, Vincent pulls a pistol from his pocket and puts two bullets in Danielle’s chest.
The crew stands in silence as they all try to process the events they've just witnessed. Miller wrestles the gun from Vincent and yells at him for shooting Danielle without reason. Vincent scoffs and points to Edwards’ dead body, was that enough of a reason he asks. Carolyn attempts to calm down the two men when they hear groaning coming from Danielle’s body. Emilia draws her gun in response and prepares to shoot her crewmate when Athina moves in front of her. She and Logan grab hold of Danielle and bring her to the medbay where the rest of the crew stays outside. Vincent stirs in the corner ready to put another bullet in Danielle’s head. Watching from outside the room Charles and Allen ponder why Danielle would kill Edward. Emilia reminds everyone of Kenji’s story about his previous crew and asks where Nick is. Everyone turns to Carolyn who tells them he's missing. Vincent mutters under his breath that it's probably Nick’s fault, earning him a punch across the jaw from Arjun. Before the crew can argue any further the lights turn red and sirens flash. Emilia recognizes that the oxygen has been tampered with. If they don't fix it everyone will die of asphyxiation. With time of the essence Carolyn, Arjun, Emilia, and Charles head towards O2 leaving Allen and Vincent behind to guard the medbay. On the way to O2, everyone gets separated when doors start closing. As soon as they leave Vincent apologizes to Allen before knocking him out cold and storming the medbay by force. With his gun in hand, he demands Vincent and Athina step away from Danielle and let him finish the job. Refusing Vincent’s demands Miller orders Athina to continue working. The doctor gets right in Vincent’s face and taunts him about having to use a gun to be powerful. Learning over Danielle’s body Athina removes the bullets allowing the dark cloud to emerge. Blood drains from Danielle’s eyes and Athina steps away from her silently. Grabbing a bone saw she walks behind Logan while he's distracted and stabs him through the back of the head with it.
Vincent reaches for his gun but Athina slashes his hand causing him to drop it. He attempts to run to the door but finds it closed. Trusting Emilia to fix the oxygen Carolyn rushes back to the medbay just in time to watch Vincent’s throat be torn to shreds through the window. Covered in blood Athina turns to Carolyn and grins. The lights turn off and when they turn back on Athina is nowhere in sight. With the oxygen fixed the crew rushes back to the medbay. Along the way, Charles spots what appears to be Nick walking into the weapons bay. Charles calls out to Nick and walks into the room, the door shutting behind him.
Running through the hallways Arjun calls out for the rest of the crew. Returning to the medbay he finds Carolyn waking up Allen. He looks through the window and wipes away a tear. Turning around he’s slammed against the door by Carolyn who asks him where he was. Arjun asks her the same question while Allen breaks up the confrontation. Prying open the door Carolyn walks inside and grabs Vincent’s gun off the floor. She also spots an open vent and realizes it leads to the electrical room. On the way there the trio run into a bleeding Charles. He sputters out that Athina and Nick attacked him. Allen helps him to his feet and carries his friend. While Arriving at the electrical room the crew is hauled at gunpoint by Emilia, dressed in her space suit. She tells them she found Athina’s body further back and points the gun at Charles. Emilia believes that similar to Kenji’s crew a virus has been brought onto the ship and infected everyone. With no one she can trust Emilia cocks the gun and demands they hand over Charles. Carolyn refuses and pushes Charles behind her, pulling out her gun. Gunfire spreads through the hallway as the two women trade shots. Ducking behind cover Allen runs back towards the medbay. Arjun attempts to reason with Emilia but she fires back, trusting no one anymore. Carolyn pulls around the corner attempting to fire with no more bullets left. Emilia laughs and walks toward the crew, telling them she’s sorry for what’s about to happen. Just then Allen hits her from behind, having ran around from behind. Falling to the ground he attempts to wrestle the gun from her, resulting in him being shot twice in the head. While Carolyn and Arjun rush to Allen’s side Charles breaks Emilia’s visor and shoots himself in the head with her gun. His body bleeds onto the floor allowing the dust to slither its way out and float into Emilia’s mouth infecting her. The infected Emilia grabs hold of the gun, knocking Arjun across the forehead before retreating into the electrical room and down the vent.
With the infected Emilia on the loose Carolyn grabs hold of the dazed Arjun and rushes to the weapons room. There they arm themselves with a set of flamethrowers, which they theorize will hopefully kill the virus. Arjun has reservations about killing Emilia, believing their friend is still alive. Carolyn hugs him and tells him what their about to do is exactly what she would have. The two scour the Skeld, checking every room for signs of her presence. Suddenly the lights go out once more, forcing the two to light their weaponry. With the flame as their only source of light, the two carefully maneuver their way back towards the electrical room. Along the way, they find the corpse of Athina, riddled with bullets. Arriving just short of the electrical room the ship comes to a sudden halt. Carolyn realizes that Emilia is in the reactor, most likely destroying the ship's power. The two rush over there in the dark and search the room. Arjun drops his flamethrower and attempts to fix the reactor which had been partially torn apart. He feels a body pressed against his back and turns around to find Emilia who tosses him away from the center console. The silent woman begins to smash Arjun’s face into the ground until Carolyn comes to his recuse with the flamethrower. She burns half of Emilia’s face off resulting in the infected woman charging at her. She tackles Carolyn to the ground and the two women brawl, trading punches while the ship begins to nosedive. Before the ship can plummet a wounded Arjun fixes the reactor enough to stabilize the ship. Feeling a sharp pain in his gut Arjun looks down to find a metal rod impaled in his torso. Despite the blood dripping down his legs, Arjun does his best to repair the damage with the help of Carolyn. Once they're done Carolyn takes hold of Arjun's hand, telling him he's a hero as he takes his last breath. Shutting his eyes Carolyn sets her sights on the wounded Emilia, picking up a metal rod as she walks towards. Standing tall above her Carolyn brings the rod down onto Emilia’s face, screaming as she beats it into a bloody pulp.
Covered in blood Carolyn grabs the flamethrower and burns Emilia’s body, decimating the smoke. With the threat contained Carolyn slowly walks to the cafeteria and makes herself a drink. She sits in the bright white room covered in blood, attempting to process the events that had just occurred. Out of nowhere a voice calls out to her. A beaten and bruised Nick stumbles out of the hallway asking for Carolyn’s help before collapsing from exhaustion. Carolyn rushes over to her husband before pausing. She drags him over to the airlock and leaves him inside, waiting for him to wake up. When Nick eventually does he pounds on the glass door and demands to be let out. He explains that the virus took control of him before leaving his body to infect Charles. Nick pleads with Carolyn to let him out, reminding her of their wedding day. Despite his pleas, Carolyn pushed a button sending Nick out of the airlock and into space. She bursts into tears and collapses to the ground. Outside the ship Nick’s body orbits around the ship, no sound of Carolyn’s screams heard.
