A Second Look: Dead Space

Welcome back for another edition of A Second Look with Jeff Stockton! In this segment I will take a "second look" at a past LRF release with a fresh set of eyes.

This has been a big season for films set in outer space with Among Us and now Green Lantern Corps coming to theaters. I decided to take a "second look" at an early space/sci-fi adaptation, the video game film Dead Space. I, like most critics, did not like Dead Space when it came out back in Season 6. It felt a bit boring and way too generic of an entry in the sci-fi/horror genre combo that ripped off too many better films while also being way too faithful to the video games to the detriment of the viewer.

Upon taking a second look at Dead Space, the film directed by David Ayer and written by Ben Collins, I discovered that the film is better than I remembered. Not dramatically so, but definitely at least a little better. The film is definitely a bit of an Alien clone, but the game was as well. I liked Colin Farrell in the lead role as he brought a bit of personality to a role that was written without any. I still think the film follows the video game too closely to the point that it can feel like you're watching someone else play video game at times, but the story isn't terrible and the cast make it better.
