Reaction: Given some of the recent box office successes of its star and filmmakers, we were definitely hoping for a better box office turn-out than this.

"I wish this 'Shrinking Man' adaptation would have pushed the material and concept further than it did. Instead, we got a pretty faithful adaptation of Richard Matheson's novel, sticking it pretty closely to other adaptations of the text and making it feel dated at times. Andrew Garfield acts above the well-worn material, giving a committed performance that absolutely manages to sell you on his condition. The final result is a fairly solid film with an outstanding lead performance that is maybe a bit too faithful to the source material." - Cal Crowe, Washington Globe

"While this would be better as a TWILIGHT ZONE or OUTER LIMITS episode, it doesn't fit a worthwhile big-picture Hollywood production in its simple form. Andrew Garfield gives a stellar performance, as usual, but it alone is unable to make up for some weak storytelling." - Alice Bunson, The Atlantic

"Billy Cruder does a fine job writing up an adaptation of the classic novel with very little deviation from the source material, but also very much appreciated change of how Scott becomes the Shrinking Man. Reitman was comfortable in his direction, feeding us his flavor of quirky humor we've come to love him for. While I wasn't too high on Andrew Garfield in the lead, he did seem a little undercooked in his performance only giving us something serviceable but not quite memorable as many other adaptations that we've seen before, for instance Eddie Murphy as the Nutty Professor was so much different from Jerry Lewis' interpretation. So the Incredible Shrinking Man was fine, but too safe for Jason Reitman, who thrives better when he can take his own risks." - Sherman J. Lovitz, USA Today

Rated PG-13 for some intense imagery and thematic material
