During his recovery, Johnny discovers that on touching people and objects he is able to tell them things they did not know. As he touches a nurse's hand, he has a vision of her daughter trapped in a fire. He tells Dr. Weiss that his mother, long believed to be dead, is alive and living in California. Sarah visits Johnny at the hospital and informs him that she got married and has a young son.

Johnny tries to get back to his usual life as a teacher, but he begins to suffer from severe headaches. One day he is contacted by a local sheriff, Bannerman (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), to help solve a series of murders. Johnny's psychic abilities provide enough information to identify the killer - who kills himself when the police show up at his door.

Meanwhile, Greg Stillson (Josh Brolin) a successful businessman and mayor of a small town in New Hampshire threatens a group of teenagers with a broken bottle, telling them that he'll kill them if they don't stop loitering in front of stores. Stillson then meets with a local businessman, blackmailing him into bankrolling Stillson's campaign for a seat in the House of Representatives.

Johnny moves to New Hampshire and begins working as a private to wealthy children. When he shakes Stillson's hand at a campaign rally, Johnny sees a vision of Sillson as President causing a massive, worldwide nuclear conflict.

Despite his abhorrence of murder, Johnny starts plotting to assassinate Stillson so that his horrific vision does not come true. When his headaches get even worse, Johnny undergoes a series of tests with Dr. Weiss, discovering that his headaches are due to an inoperable brain tumor that has developed since the accident. Realizing he won't much longer, Johnny buys a rifle to shoot Stillson at his next rally.

As Stillson begins his speech, Johnny attempts to shoot Stillson, but misses and is wounded by Stillson's bodyguards. Before he can fire again, Stillson grabs a young child and holds him up as a human shield. Johnny pauses, unable to shoot, and is shot twice by the bodyguards, causing him to fall off a balcony. Reporters record Stillson in the act of using the child as a human shield. Johnny touches Stillson a final time and knows that the terrible future Stillson would bring as President has been prevented.
