Plot: In the Colonial Era, for Maria (Brie Larson, it's time to choose an husband. Her parents Samuel (Tim Robbins) and Laura (Catherine Keener) chose the son of a farmer, Eugene (Paul Dano), who lived near them, but Maria has other plans in mind. She meets a foreign man who lives in the city, Larry (Jake Gyllenhall), and a fur trapper named Frank (Alexander Skarsgard) and she must decide between the three of them, because her father is kicking her out of the house, they can't afford to continue to feed her and her numerous siblings. By spending time with each of the pretenders, she sees three different outcomes : continue to live on a farm, explore the city, or live freely in the woods with the fur trapper.

Sadly, during the winter, the fur trapper is killed in a snowstorm after he tried to go visit Maria. Saddened, Maria decides to get out of the family's farm and to go to the city. Before she leaves, her mother becomes terribly sick and her father forces her to stay to take care of her mother. On her deathbed, her mother tells Maria that she should marry the farmer, because that's what she wants and Maria promises her to do so. Unable to break her promise, Maria marries the farmer and lives a miserable life until she dies during childbirth.
