Flashback a couple of years earlier, Tomino's path crossed of Dan Roberts (Joaquin Phoenix), otherwise known in the underworld as the Raven. A souless killer and problem solver, Roberts was hired by Tomino to eradicate the competition. In the end, Tomino ended up at the top of the organized crime ladder. The Raven is deemed uncatchable, he works in the night and never leaves a trace. The election of Jacobs forces Tomino to request the services of the Raven once again.

Roberts agrees and plans to kidnap her when she's asleep. He ultimately succeeds to do so and drives away in Canada to hide her. Completely destroyed her parents Henry and Jackie (Kathy Bates) desperately ask the police led by Detectives Barbara Henry (Keira Knightley) and Harold Wyler (Michael Shannon) to bring back their daughter safe. Her boyfriend Harry Jenkins (Chiwetel Ejiofor), unknown of her parents to that point, engages in a quest to find her back without the police's help.

During that time, Susan and Dan are hidden deep into the Canadian forest. Unable to complete the task and to kill her, the Raven starts to develop feelings for his victims and Susan falls for him. With the mob, the police and a rogue and desperate boyfriend looking for them, the Raven and Susan are eventually found. Then, when everyone thought Susan would be brought home safely and the Raven would be arrested, Susan shockingly helps the Raven to escape and she goes with him. Then begins a game of cat and mouse between the four parties.
