Plot: On the day of her last concert, Mimi Cartwright (Elle Fanning) meets with her agent Ted Berkowitz (Scoot McNairy) and her hands-on manager Rhea Ewans (Malin Akerman) about her decision to leave behind her teen pop idol image and become an actress. Ted and Rhea tell her that they have lined up a recurring role for her on a cable series called 'Double Bind'. During the concert, Mimi announces that she is leaving behind the music industry to focus solely on her acting - much to the shock and disbelief of the thousands of fans in attendance. After the show, Mimi checks her phone where she sees dozens of texts calling her a 'traitor' from unknown numbers.
On her first day on set of 'Double Bind', Mimi arrives extra early to watch her new co-stars perform. Mimi talks to Rhea about the texts she received. Rhea informs her that someone has hacked Mimi's official social media accounts and posted links to a website called 'Mimi's Room'. As Mimi is on-set ready to shoot, Ted opens a fan letter meant for Mimi, but then it explodes, severely injuring him. Mimi asks Rhea if they should call the police. Rhea tells her that she will handle it, but that she ultimately thinks it was just a prank. After she is done filming for the day, Mimi decides to check out the 'Mimi's Room' site, only to find a diary entry that describes Mimi's entire day in perfect detail.
At the hospital, Rhea and Ted discuss how Mimi's should be upgraded from recurring to regular on 'Double Bind'. Later they meet with the producers, who agree in making Mimi's part bigger. When Rhea sees the script for the next episode, she is appalled that they want Mimi to film a nude rape scene. She insists they write out the rape, but Mimi tells her that she will do it. Rhea is worried that such a scene could turn away Mimi's young fanbase. While in a limo on the way home, Mimi sees an apparition of herself crying across from her that she doesn't want to shoot the scene.
When they finally shoot the scene, Mimi has a panic attack part way through and starts crying for real. Everyone on set marvels at how real her performance is. After filming, Mimi returns home to find that all of her fish have died. Then her apparition appears on her TV screen, laughing at her. Rhea calls Mimi to tell her that one of the producers of 'Double Bind' has been murdered and that there will be no filming the next day.
Mimi goes to a photoshoot with photographer Marcus (Justin Theroux). He gets her take more and more clothes off until she is completely nude. He tells her that if she is trying to shed her teen idol image she needs to be daring, unafraid to show her body and shock people. Mimi sees her apparition which each flash of the camera. It taunts her for being dirty and cheap. That night after the shoot, Marcus is attacked and murdered by an unseen assailant in his studio.
Marcus' murder goes public, as does the word that Mimi was one of the last people to see him alive. On the set of 'Double Bind' she is approached by Detective Oshie (Desmond Harrington) who asks her about the nature of the shoot and whether she slept with Marcus. She tells Detective Oshie that there were some nude photographs, but that she had no sexual relations with Marcus - that it was entirely professional.
That night, Mimi is attacked in her home by a man calling himself "Mi-Mania" (David Dastmalchian), proclaiming to be her number one fan. He tells her that he disagrees with her career change before trying to rape her. Mimi grabs a lamp and beats him repeatedly in the head until his skull is caved in. Rhea shows up and finds Mimi covered in Mi-Mania's blood and helps her clean up and puts her to bed.
Mimi wakes up and sees that Rhea is still there. Mimi starts to realize something is off when she sees fish in the aquarium and the lamp no longer broken. She finds Rhea wearing a replica of the costume Mimi wore during her last concert and realizes that Rhea must be the false diarist based on the information included. Rhea reveals that she partnered with Mi-Mania to kill the people who have been ruining Mimi's reputation. She then attacks Mimi with a letter opener, stabbing her in the shoulder. Mimi's runs out of Rhea's replica apartment and down the street. Rhea chases after her and corners Mimi in an alleyway. Rhea attacks Mimi again, but Mimi rips off the wig Rhea is wearing and throws it into the street. Mimi then stabs Rhea with a broken glass bottle. Rhea goes into the street to retreive the wig. A truck then comes down the street. Rhea sees it coming, but doesn't move out of the way, and is run over. Mimi asks the driver to call for help before she passes out from blood loss.
