Resume: Alden Ehrenreich

Alden Ehrenreich may not be a household name yet, but he quietly carved out quite the career so far with Last Resort Films. Every film he has appeared in prior to this season has been nominated for at least one Golden Reel Award, with the actor himself finally being recognized last season with his first Best Actor nomination for To the White Sea. In this new recurring segment, Resume, we will take a look at the filmography of the young star.

Season 1
The Cry of the Owl
Director: Chris Evans
Writer: D.R. Cobb

Budget: $36,000,000
Domestic Box Office: $57,104,022
Foreign Box Office: $51,158,656
Total Profit: $8,769,207

The Cry of the Owl, the seemingly long forgotten thriller featured Ehrenreich as the jealous ex-boyfriend of Emma Watson who seeks to ruin her new flame, played by Chris Evans. The tense thriller was nominated for one Golden Reel Award (Best Actress - Emma Watson) and performed decently at the box office.

Season 2

Flicker

Director: Anton Corbijn
Writer: John Malone

Budget: $47,000,000
Domestic Box Office: $41,159,027
Foreign Box Office: $51,415,234
Total Profit: -$14,223,055

Flicker's box office performance was heartbreaking, but this was clearly the film where Ehrenreich first got to really stretch his acting muscles for the studio, acting from an outstanding debut script from John Malone. The film ended up receiving four Golden Reel nominations (winning Best Adaptation and Best Director), with many feeling Ehrenreich's lack of a nomination for Best Actor was a pretty big snub.

Season 5

To the White Sea

Director: Andrew Dominik
Writer: John Malone

Budget: $54,000,000
Domestic Box Office: $71,154,033
Foreign Box Office: $100,552,253
Total Profit: $73,908,222

Ehrenreich took a couple of seasons off before coming back with a vengeance in Season 5 with the first of two highly acclaimed roles. In Andrew Dominik's WWII thriller, Ehrenreich played a soldier stranded deep behind enemy lines in Japan who must make his way north through the island nation to survive. The film was beloved by critics and audiences alike, making a healthy profit while being nominated for four Golden Reel Awards (including Best Picture and Best Actor) and winning two (Best Adaptation and Best Director). Ehrenreich received his first acting nomination for the film.

Cosa Nostra
Director: Denis Villeneuve
Writer: James Morgan

Budget: $67,000,000
Domestic Box Office: $78,603,043
Foreign Box Office: $69,959,677
Total Profit: $15,992,914

Another film that was praised by both audiences and the critics. Ehrenreich played a younger version of Joaquin Phoenix's character from The Raven in the Night, wholly making the character his own with instant classic scenes like his attack on Landor's mansion and his first meeting with Robert De Niro. The film was nominated for 6 Golden Reel Awards, winning three (Best Ensemble Cast, Best Villain - Sam Rockwell, Best Supporting Actor - Sam Rockwell). Clearly, Ehrenreich could be considered the lucky charm of Season 5 with his two films totaling five Golden Reel Awards from 10 nominations.

Season 6

Death Dream

Director: David Robert Mitchell
Writer: John Malone

Budget: $30,000,000
Domestic Box Office: $43,236,082
Foreign Box Office: $36,353,003
Total Profit: $13,959,067

The young star continued his working relationship with writer John Malone in Death Dream, where he plays a US soldier who returns home from Afghanistan eerily changed. The performance is a truly chilling one that will not surprise anyone if it starts getting mentioned again come awards season. The creepy film was a minor success at the box office while continuing the actor's streak of highly acclaimed films.

Up Next:

The rising star will next take on a supporting role in the internet themed romance film Girl/Girl from writer Chad Taylor and director Eliza Hittman. Past this season, there have been rumors of the actor working again with John Malone either on a period drama or a western in Season 7.
