Plot: William Dane (Lucas Jade Zumann) is a successful writer director at only 20 years old and he is struggling with his new film. He is experiencing writers block and he wants to make a semi autobiographical picture. William and his friend Terwon (Tyrel Jackson Williams) are just getting home from a movie. they are talking about the movie. William and Terwon then go get burgers at Five Guys and then just talk about life. Terwon is in college while William is only a sophomore in high school. Terwon asks how high school is going and William says it’s going well. He mentions the girl Amanda (Kara Hayward) that he likes.
William is writing a poem on his computer with great passion. He finally gets tired and puts on a movie. The film he puts on is the film Taken with Liam Neeson. He looks at the movie and reminds him of the girl he likes. The next day William is informed that Amanda’s boyfriend Michael (Jaden Smith) just broke up with her. William then asks Amanda out and Amanda says she has a boyfriend and William then asks how she got a boyfriend in a day and she says a lot of boys are interested in me.
William then talks to Michael and Michael says that Amanda is bad news and that she cheated on him and Michael shows William some graffiti that he made in the bathroom where he drew a picture of Amanda sucking a bunch of dicks and with a thought bubble saying “I’m a whore”. William then is shocked and then just goes home and writes a lot of poems and then Michael sends William, Amanda’s phone number. The film then goes into a montage of William asking out Amanda and her saying no.
William's mom Elizabeth (Cynthia Nixon) is his single mom and she comes back from work and she hears about William asking out this one girl over and over again and she gets mad about it and she books therapy sessions for William. Elizabeth has a meeting with the head of school and they ask that William stay away from Amanda.
William has his first therapy session with the therapist and it doesn’t really work and he runs out of the session. William then talks to Michael and they both prank call Amanda and they pretend to be French people.
William and Terwon and William's mom go to Watch Hill, Rhode Island, and William in the car ride home is typing a short screenplay he is working on and Terwon sees it and looks with anger. The screenplay is loosely based on Amanda.
William and Terwon go to the movies and William sees Poltergeist and Terwon sees Mad Max Fury Road and after the movie they both drive back from Watch Hill and William drops Terwon off at his house. After this the school calls Elizabeth and finds out about the prank call. Elizabeth then yells at William for doing it.
The next week William is basically just doing his homework and waiting for the week to end. At the end of the week William asks out Amanda one more time and she says no and Terwon tries to stop him but he doesn’t do it. William goes home and cries and Terwon takes him to the movies. Terwon then is picked up by his mom and William just stays in his room crying. The film then cuts to Amanda graduating and cross cuts between William crying and Amanda and her friends at the graduation party. Terwon is even at the graduation party.
Terwon texts William about the graduation party and Terwon admits that he went to Amanda’s graduation party and William is incredibly mad and Terwon said that he had to go or else his mom would kill him. William hangs up the phone. William then attempts suicide but he decides to just go watch a movie. This movie is Place Beyond The Pines it is a revival show at an art house theater and it is really emotional for him. William then finishes the screenplay and sends it off to the studio. He then goes to a coffee shop and processes everything.
