Reaction: Films rated NC-17 have always struggled at the box office for a variety of reasons - the biggest two reason being that fewer theaters are willing to show them and fewer media outlets are willing to market them. It was a gamble that its audience would find it and that there would be enough of an audience to put the film in the black.
"The Cry of the Night Lady is far too violent, and sexually violent at that, for me to soundly recommend the film. There's probably an audience for the film out there somewhere, but cardboard characters who exist solely to abuse or be abused did not convert me." - Stephen Anderson, Entertainment Weekly
"The film shows its influences, especially A Serbian Film, way too obviously. It still manages to pull of its dark vibe, even if it pushes the sex and violence too far for most audiences. The beautiful Emanuela Postacchini does what she can with her title role, but the real standout is the creepy performance from the enigmatic and under-cast Vincent Gallo." - Charles Triano, Los Angeles Times
"An obvious riff on the infamous A Serbian Film, Lars von Trier's LRF debut is an interesting one. I'm not sure it's necessarily a 'good' movie, but fans of this type of stuff should appreciate it. A little more character development could have helped the film a lot though as we don't learn anything about either of the leads or villains prior to the almost immediate graphic sex and violence." - George Ryan, Philadelphia Inquirer
Rated NC-17 for pervasive graphic violent and sexual content, disturbing images and language
