Plot: On October 13, 2069, humanity has destroyed itself in a biological war. The war has effectively killed out the human race, leaving only a few hundred surviving androids. Two of the surviving androids, John SM-11 (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Alice SF-17 (Karen Gillan) decide to recreate the human race from DNA samples.

Alice and John live in a small encampment that, before the war, was an android/human interaction facility. Using the DNA samples, they successfully recreate a human male. They hide him and educate him in a cabin in a prohibited territory away from the main android encampment. He eventually grows up and they decide to name him Abel (Nick Robinson).

John is a member of the android council, the governing body of the remaining androids ruled by the military android, Patton (Common). Patton and his military run constant searches for any remaining humans to ensure that humanity can never return.

John uses his relatively powerful position on the council to arrange food and equipment for the cabin. Abel eventually begins to explore on his own. While on a walk outside, he is forced to destroy a military android to escape capture. This alerts the military androids to the possible presence of a human. Another android, Ashira SF-04 (Tao Okamoto), betrays John and Alice, claiming that the best way to serve humans is to keep them from being alive since they will only destroy themselves again. John is questioned and executed by Patton.

Abel and Alice sneak into the encampment and John partially dismantled and crucified while the other androids are forced to watch. Abel is discovered, and Patton leads a full scale operation to capture him. Realizing there is only one way for Abel to survive, Alice tells him how to disable the central power grid, which would disable all the remaining androids, including herself.

Alice distracts the military androids, allowing Abel to sneak into the central facility, where he switches off the power grid, leaving all the androids around powerless and frozen. He returns to the cabin to find that Alice has set up the equipment to create more humans, with it set to create a human female.
