Regret (Hugo Weaving), Mercy (John Lithgow) and Truth (Ed Harris) of find him guilty and he's stripped of his rank
and branded with the mark of shame by Tartarus (Ben Mendelsohn).
On the
Orbital Defense Platform, Master Chief (Alexander Skarsgard) is given a
new armor by Avery Johnson (Chadwick Boseman) recently promoted to
Sergeant Major. Fleet Admiral Terrance Hood (John Slattery) oversees a
ceremony awarding Master Chief, Johnson and Miranda Keyes (Margaret
Qualley), accepting the award for her deceased father. It is interrupted
by Cortana (Sarah Gadon), announcing 15 Covenant Ships invading Earth.
Master Chief and his squad team up together to protect the station. The
Master Chief sends the bomb placed in the station by Covenants in space,
destroying a couple of ships in the process. After successfully
protecting the station, the Master Chief is sent on Earth's surface to
fight off the Covenant Army in New Mombasa with Johnson and Miranda
Keyes.
Led by the Prophet of Regret, the Covenant Army,
despite the element of surprise of their attack, struggle against the
Earth's army. The Master Chief, after being dropped a bit away from
action, is able to reach Johnson' and Miranda's post. After a lengthy
battle, they're able to hold off the Covenant Army, who flees Earth,
with the squad chasing them in the UNSC's In Amber Clad ship. The New
Mombasa city is left completely destroyed after the both ships use their
atmosphere jumps, killing thousands of citizens in the process.
After
the Prophet of Regret left to lead the Covenant Army in Earth's
invasion, the Prophets of Truth and Mercy allow Thel'Vadamee to become
an Arbiter, a will of the Prophets, tasked to complete something
impossible for redemption of his crimes. They task him to kill the
Heretic Leader, a Covenant who was the chief of a gas mine who started a
rebellion against the Prophets. The Arbiter is sent in the gas mine,
battling both the heretics and the Flood, parasite organisms. He finally
finds the Leader, with 343 Guilty Spark,a human built oracle who now
sides with the Covenants. The battle resumes and the Leader is killed
by the Arbiter. He tries to gain information on why the Heretics
betrayed the Covenants, but Tartarus arrives out of nowhere, extracting
343 Guilty Spark from the gas mine.
Miranda Keyes and her
fleet were able to follow the Prophet of Regret without being caught.
They realize that Regret led them to another Halo ring. Keyes determines
that Regret should be killed before he destroys the Ring. John-117 is
dropped on the ring surface with ODSTs to kill Regret. After marching on
the Ring with the ODSTs and killing Regret's personal guard, the Master
Chief is able to kill the Prophet. However, John-117 is unable to
escape and is forced to jump in a lake and being dragged by the
tentacles of the Gravemind, an highly intelligent Flood.
The
Arbiter, who needed to complete one more task to have his crimes
pardoned, was sent by the two remaining prophets on the Ring to recover
the Sacred Icon, essential in the Ring's destruction. Arbiter
encounters Johnson and Keyes who wanted to take possession of the Icon
and captures them while taking possession of the tool. Tartarus
intervenes again, freeing Johnson and Keyes and taking the Icon from the
Arbiter. Tartarus reveals himself to be a traitor as he throws the
Arbiter in the lake.
Both John-117 and the Arbiter are
now in the abyss underneath the lake, saved by the Gravemind, who tells
them that the Halos destroy life, they don't save it. The Ring being
right next to the Arbiter's home, he reluctantly joins the Master Chief
in his quest to destroy the Ring. The Gravemind sends the Master Chief
after Tartarus to retrieve the Icon, while he sends the Arbiter to the
Control Room to halt the Covenant from activating the Ring's
auto-destruction.
The Master Chief appears right in the
middle of a war zone. He battles Covenants while helping a couple of
Marines. He enters the Covenant's headquarters on the Ring and makes
his way through the conference room, where he witnesses Floods,
controlled by the Gravemind, enter the High Charity, where the two
remaining Prophets are. Mercy is infected by the Flood, but Truth
manages to escape, telling John-117, knowing that he's listening that
he's going to Earth to finish what Regret started. The Master Chief
boards a ship and leaves Cortana behind, promising her that he'll come
back for her.
The Arbiter is teleported close to the
Halo's control room. There, he meets Johnson and Keyes with whom he
forms an unlikely alliance to prevent the Halo to fire on the nearby
planet. They manage to breach in the control room, where they find
Tartarus and 343 Guilty Spark. They are overwhelmed by Tartarus' forces
power and Tartarus manages to activate the Halo's firing procedure. In
one final effort, Johnson, the Arbiter and Keyes manage to kill Tartarus
and to stop the Halo from firing. However, 343 Guilty Spark tells them
that he send a message to the rest of the Halos to prevent them from
auto-destruction, which makes all of their work worthless, and placed
them all on fire mode stand by for remote activation from the Ark, the
first and biggest Halo.
Truth arrives on Earth, with the
Master Chief behind him, warning Admiral Hood of his presence and
telling him that need to finish this fight.
