Reaction: While we were honestly expecting better numbers based on the involvement of Lanthimos, Chalamet and Phoenix, but we're certainly grateful that the film managed a profit.

"The usually solid young actor Timothee Chalamet gives a fairly bland performance, especially compared to the Nic Cage-style manic performance Phoenix gives opposite him. It's almost like they were in two different movies, and the uneven script by Alex Conn doesn't really do any of them any favors." - Charles Yost, Oregonian

"The Host is more weird than scary. The actions of Joaquin Phoenix's character are more laughably odd than scary, and I don't think that was the filmmakers' intention." - Eli McCown, NJ.com

"The best way to describe The Host would be to say it is bizarre. It is by far Yorgos Lanthimos' most bizarre film to date, and bizarre is already his bread and butter. Phoenix plays his villainous role like an unhinged lunatic right from the start, and is clearly having a good time. There are some pretty creepy images throughout the film, even if they don't always make sense." - Stan Kyle, Omaha World-Herald

Rated R for sexuality, nudity, disturbing images, violence and language.
