The Roundup with Jeff Stockton (Season 10 Golden Reel Awards Edition)

Alrighty, folks. The nominees have been announced for the 10th (!) Golden Reel Awards. For this awards-centric edition of The Roundup, I will go through each category and tell you who I think should win the award, who I think actually will win the award, who I think has no chance to win, and who I think could be considered a snub - followed by a brief thought on the category this season.

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN
Who Should Win: Blackbird
Who Will Win: Blackbird
No Chance: The Host

Thought(s): The visual design of Blackbird was creepy and unsettling, meshing perfectly with the script and the talents of director Chan-wook Park. I would be absolutely shocked if any of the other films won here.

BEST SOUNDTRACK

Who Should Win: Hands on a Hard Body
Who Will Win: Letter to Myself
No Chance: Maximum Max

Thought(s): Not a very big crop of soundtracks to chose from, but Richard Linklater's films are known for their rocking soundtracks, and Hands on a Hard Body is no different.

MOST WANTED SEQUEL
Who Should Win: Justice League International
Who Will Win: Justice League International
No Chance: Every other nominee

Thought(s): Who doesn't want another Justice League film from LRF's DC Comics Universe?

BEST ENSEMBLE CAST

Who Should Win: Hands on a Hard Body
Who Will Win: Ghost Town
No Chance: Haute Couture

Thought(s): This is one of the more competitive categories this season. It's really a toss up between Hands on a Hard Body and Ghost Town. I'd have to go with HOAHB though as it gave us a unique ensemble where everyone acts opposite everybody else, unlike Ghost Town where it's really three separate smaller ensemble casts.

BEST STARRING COUPLE
Who Should Win: Russell Crowe & Mackenzie Foy - Kite
Who Will Win: Russell Crowe & Mackenzie Foy - Kite
No Chance: Anne Hathaway & Jennifer Lawrence - Eileen

Thought(s): Foy and Crowe were both perfect for their roles, plus, based on the number of nominations and the reviews for the film it clearly has a good deal of momentum heading into the ceremony.

BEST VILLAIN
Who Should Win: John Hawkes - 7 Days
Who Will Win: Russell Crowe - Kite
No Chance: Frances McDormand - Eileen

Thought(s): It's got to be down to Hawkes and Crowe here. If I had to guess Crowe will end up losing out on Best Actor and have to settle for a win here, while Hawkes may end up winning in the Supporting Actor category instead.

BEST ADAPTATION
Who Should Win: Blackbird
Who Will Win: Kite
No Chance: 7 Days

Thought(s): A tough category to guess, but I'm thinking Blackbird (one of my favorite films of the season) is going to lose out on some of the bigger awards and take this one as a consolation prize.

BEST ORIGINAL STORY
Who Should Win: Ghost Town
Who Will Win: Letter to Myself
No Chance: Maximum Max

Thought(s): A two horse race between Ghost Town and Letter to Myself. Both writers are beloved, so it really could go either way. Maximum Max definitely has no chance though, as Reuben Schwartz said in his write-up, clearly it was a weak batch of original films after the top couple.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Who Should Win: Joey King - Letter to Myself
Who Will Win: Frances McDormand - Eileen
No Chance: Emma Stone - Haute Couture

Thought(s): McDormand appears to have some momentum, but Eileen wasn't a great film in my opinion. Joey King, on the other hand gave a great performance in a great film. Clearly Stone got a nomination based on star-power.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Who Should Win: Kyle Chandler - Ghost Town
Who Will Win: John Hawkes - 7 Days
No Chance: Al Pacino - Haute Couture

Thought(s): Like I said with Best Villain, I'm betting this is the one Hawkes goes home with. Personally though, I was most impressed by Chandler's performance in Ghost Town.

BEST ACTRESS
Who Should Win: Mackenzie Foy - Kite
Who Will Win: Mackenzie Foy - Kite
No Chance: Jennifer Lawrence - Eileen

Thought(s): Jennifer Lawrence is clearly getting nominations based on her fame more than her merit, granted this season didn't have a very big crop of female lead roles. Foy's got to win this one, right?

BEST ACTOR
Who Should Win: Bryan Cranston - 7 Days
Who Will Win: Russell Crowe - Kite
No Chance: Jake Gyllenhaal - Blackbird

Thought(s): Kite has a lot of momentum right now, so I won't be surprised if he wins, although I'm rooting for Cranston who gave a tour de force performance.

BEST DIRECTOR
Who Should Win: Nicolas Winding Refn - Kite
Who Will Win: Barry Jenkins - Ghost Town
No Chance: S. Craig Zahler - 7 Days

Thought(s): Ghost Town isn't really a "director" film, it's a performance film, so while I think it's probably going to win, I don't think Barry Jenkins did the best directorial job of the season. Refn, on the other hand, completely made his material his own with tremendous style.

BEST PICTURE
Who Should Win: Ghost Town
Who Will Win: Ghost Town
No Chance: Hands on a Hard Body

Thought(s): Ghost Town is probably the best all-arounf film of the season. I loved Hands on a Hard Body, but it's award chances seem to have lost a lot of steam, especially missing out on nominations in every acting categry, something not seen from Best Picture winners very often.
