Plot : Shauna (Danielle Brooks) is at the park with her niece and Amy (Emma Mackey) and Cass (Maya Hawke) and she forces them to sing the Three Little Kittens lullaby to the kids and their parents nearby. When they are done, they ask for an encore and Amy says they don’t know any other lullaby and she’s fed up of singing kids songs. A woman in the park says it’s not that hard to sing a lullaby and Amy starts improvising a vulgar lullaby on the same rhythm that the previous one and the parents leave, outraged at the vulgar song and a woman says she’ll call the police on them. Amy answers back to the lady that she should ask the police to remove the stick up her butt. Shauna can’t believe what Amy just said and Cass says she called her a lady, so that’s an improvement and we go to the opening credits.
The girls are still in the park, sitting on the grass on a shiny day. Shauna is mad a Amy for signing something vulgar again. She says she’s ashamed of hanging out with her sometimes. Amy says she can’t help it when she’s not feeling good. She tells them she learned from Pretzel that her mother is a prostitute and she believes she was born from that and it bums her out. Unsure how to react, Shauna and Cass look at each other in silence. Shauna grabs Amy by the hand and tells her it’s not about how she came into this world, but how she decides to live that matters. She suggests Ada should get her own apartment to get away from her mom who is a burden for her. Amy argues with her that she can’t leave her mother behind because she still loves her. Cass interrupts the argument by announcing she’s pregnant. Amy, surprised by the announcement, asks as a joke, to stop the unpleasant mood, if Shauna is going to tell them she’s suddenly turning white. Shauna asks Cass what she intends to do and she says she tried to get aborted last week but she choked. Amy offers her supports if she wants her. Shauna says that if they do this she’s not talking to either of them anymore. Cass says she doesn’t want to keep it and Shauna is mad that she called her fetus “it”. She says you can’t throw away life like that, she fucked, she must assume the consequences. Cass says it’s unfair of her to judge her like that. She’s not with Kevin anymore and he’s most probably the father. Shauna stands by her Christian beliefs and Amy argues with, telling her to be supportive, she’s talking for once. While they have their back turned, Cass gets up and leaves. When their argument is over, they turn around and realise Cass is gone. Shauna says Cass was supposed to babysit her niece today while she works. Amy says she can do it. Shauna laughs it off as if Amy can survive a day with a toddler.
Amy is back home with Shauna’s niece playing with her and her mother, Bianca (Megan Mullally). They sat the kid in a tight laundry basket and they push it across the floor. The kid is having fun and Bianca struggles to stand straight. When she sees this, Amy decides the game is over and tries to get the kid out of the basket, but she’s stuck.
Shauna is working when she decides to call her sister Nia (Amanda Stalberg), telling her the baby needs her and that she better be there tonight because she has her second audition and she doesn’t want to screw it up because of her. She’s interrupted by J.D. (Algee Smith) who wants to borrow $20, because he claims his parents are struggling for cash. She gives him the cash and he squeezes her boobs as a thank you gift.
Cass is also back home and drinking her sorrows away. She receives a text from Kevin and struggles to decide whether or not she sends something back. She settles with telling him she’s pregnant and she throws her phone across the room, but sadly, it didn’t break.
At the end of her shift, Shauna runs back to Amy’s place to get her niece back and wonders why she smells like peanut butter. In a flashback, we see the chaotic way in which Amy and Bianca tried to get her out of the bucket and it involved peanut butter. Amy tells her she has no idea and runs away. She runs all the way to an apartment building. She rings the bell and asks to visit the available apartment. The landlord, Alan (Dean Winters) lets her in. She tucks her shirt in and deepens her cleavage so her bra shows and gets upstairs. He meets with her and gives her the characteristics of the place, giving unnecessary details. Amy likes it and says she’ll rent the place. Alan asks for one month in advance and a reference and Amy says she doesn’t have any of this, but she has something else to offer. She starts kissing him.
Cass gets a call on her phone and crawls on the floor to answer. She sees the number and sees someone knocking on the door, it’s Kevin (Jake Cannavale). He sees her and she crawls back in the kitchen and grabs a knife. She reaches for her cellphone and calls Amy, who’s having sex with Alan. She tells her to call the police and she’s on her way. She excuses herself and asks Alan if she got the apartment. He hesitates a bit and he says she got it. Kevin is now trying to break the doorframe and Cass screams at him to go away.
Amy gets through in the backdoor as Kevin breaks the front door open. He goes to hit Cass, but she threatens to stab him. Amy tries to interfere and says she’ll call the cops if he hurts her. Kevin hits them both and kicks Amy down as she calls the police and he leaves in a hurry. Cass says the police will find all her hidden drugs, but Amy tells her to calm down, she didn’t even call the cops, her cellphone is dead.
The following day, Shauna is anxious for her audition, as her sister isn’t home and she has to go to her audition and her niece is sick. At the same time , as Amy is leaving Cass’ house, she bumps into Nassim (Ramy Youssef) who recognizes her from the other day. He invites her over to play ping-pong. She is dismissive at first, but accepts. Shauna has no choice but to take care of her niece. When she sees her invitation letter, she grabs it and sticks it close to her chest and starts crying thinking about her broken dreams. Amy is having fun with Nassim as he tries to explain to her the intricacies of ping-pong, but she’s not interested. He decides to walk her home. She gets upstairs and sees a notice on her door that her mother and her got evicted because Bianca wasn’t paying the rent. Bianca is crying on the floor next to the door and Amy embraces her.
