Resume: George MacKay

George MacKay has quietly built up a solid career in Last Resort Films, with the highlight obviously being his starring role in Excalibur. This round he is back in another leading role in the latest project from director Steven Soderbergh, Dandelion. Here's a look at MacKay's resume....

Season 11
The Devil in the White City
Director: David Fincher
Writer: Jimmy Ellis

Budget: $75,000,000
Domestic Box Office: $59,637,112
Foreign Box Office: $53,904,541
Total Profit: -$57,448,097

George MacKay made his debut in Season 11 with a supporting role in The Devil in the White City. The film looked like a sure-fire hit on paper, but wound up being a huge and expensive flop both with critics and at the box office.

Season 16
Oklahoma!
Director: Damien Chazelle
Writer: Chad Taylor

Budget: $68,000,000
Domestic Box Office: $148,683,112
Foreign Box Office: $217,006,956
Total Profit: $160,590,000

The failure of The Devil in the White City didn't appear to hurt MacKay's career much as he returned in Season 16 with roles in two major films. The first was a supporting role in the musical remake, Oklahoma! The film was a huge hit at the box office and ended up being nominated for 6 Golden Reel Awards (but did not win any).

Excalibur

Domestic Box Office: $80,188,342
Foreign Box Office: $169,497,874
Total Profit: $58,214,866

Later in Season 16, MacKay found himself in the starring role in Nicolas Winding Refn's Excalibur remake. Critics praised MacKay's performance, which earned him a nomination for Best Actor. The film itself went on to win 4 GRA trophies out of 10 nominations, including a victory in the Best Picture category.

Season 18
Worried Mind

Writer: Chad Taylor

Budget: $35,000,000
Domestic Box Office: $26,238,099
Foreign Box Office: $31,531,967
Total Profit: -$12,045,113

MacKay sat out a couple seasons after his busy Season 16, returning for a supporting role in the Robert Pattinson-led Eric Clapton biopic. The film failed to latch on to audiences at the box office, but it was well-received by critics.

Season 20
Antarctica
Director: Danny Boyle
Writer: Wyatt Allen

Budget: $46,000,000
Domestic Box Office: $76,497,120
Foreign Box Office: $87,096,336

Season 20 saw George MacKay as part of the ensemble cast of Antarctica. The true story Adventure/Drama added another box office hit to MacKay's filmography.

Season 21
Mexican Gothic

Writer: Rene Menzie

Budget: $50,000,000
Domestic Box Office: $55,732,434
Foreign Box Office: $66,438,581
Total Profit: $23,429,373

Just one season after Antarctica, George MacKay was back on the big screen as one of the male leads in Guillermo del Toro's Mexican Gothic. Critics and audiences were both fairly warm toward the film.

Season 23
The House of Romanov
Director: Sam Mendes
Writers: Ben Collins & John Malone

Budget: $70,000,000
Domestic Box Office: $60,495,237

Total Profit: -$9,895,993

George MacKay was back in Season 23 with a supporting role as a kindly Russian soldier in Sam Mendes' expensive historical film, The House of Romanov. Despite strong reviews, the film did not manage to make a profit for Last Resort Films.

After the release of Dandelion, George MacKay is not expected to return to LRF screens in the immediate future, although he is attached to a couple of projects that are further off in the distance.
