Reaction: This film furthers Steve Carell's lack of box office success outside of the comedy genre (joining other recent financially unsuccessful dramatic films starring Carell such as Beautiful Boy, Last Flag Flying and Foxcatcher). The film is also the lowest grossing film for writer Ann Morrow (and the second lowest grossing film for co-writer James Morgan). The filmmakers had requested that the marketing department not reveal the casting of the imaginary characters, which we honored, but one has to think that not including well-known actors such as Jim Carrey, Bill Murray and Ezra Miller in the advertising had to hurt the box office take of the film.

"This film works based entirely on how convincing Steve Carell is in the film. His interactions with his imaginary creations are great throughout. They alternate between comical, serious and tragic, giving us a wonderful insight into Carell's inner-turmoil." - George Ryan, Philadelphia Inquirer

"While the ending feels false, the first 80% of the film is so good it's mostly forgivable. Carell and Walken are great, and their relationship is the core to the story." - Ken Hammerschmidt, Washington Post

"David O. Russell's first film for Last Resort Films is thankfully reminiscent of his strong early work. The successful balance between serious drama and off-kilter comedy helps keep the film interesting." - Bernie Berkman, The Plain Dealer
