Reaction: Definitely not the numbers we were looking for Oliver Stone's first film since his Best Picture-winning Jonestown. The poor performance also starts Jacob Jones' resume with the studio on a less than pleasant foot. Hopefully Jones' next films perform better...
"Happy Nuke Year just doesn't commit in one direction enough to really work as a whole. It's not funny enough to work as a fun satire, and it's not quite serious enough (despite the stakes) to work as a straight-up drama." - Ken Hammerschmidt, Washington Post
"What Happy Nuke Year lacks in narrative cohesiveness, it more than makes up for in colorful characters. LaBeouf is great as the idealistic young senator, who may have the right words, but not always the right actions. Sheen is amusing as the libertarian who doesn't give one iota about anything other than his own personal freedom." - Sandy Glavine, Atlanta Constitution-Journal
"The film doesn't always work, but it is an entertaining film for the most part. The cast understand their roles (although Gal Gadot seems especially miscast as a Cuban-American Senator) and perform them admirably, and director Oliver Stone is allowed to exhibit his distrust of the government bodies in a daunting and amusing manner." - Lisa Winger, Newsday
