Reaction: Excellent numbers for this historical drama. It can be a risky genre (especially recently), as seen with the box office numbers for films like The Story of the Assassin, La Resistance and Merdeka. The film is also a nice box office success for McQueen, whose only previous film for the studio, Swim Through the Darkness, lost money.

"Mandingos is a bit of an odd combination of McQueen's 12 Years a Slave and a boxing drama, but it surprisingly works well thanks to a talented cast and an entertaining script by Mo Buck." - Adam Carpenter, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

"There are some brutal fight scenes, but I honestly don't think I got to know a single one of the characters in the film outside of the fights." - Jeremy Raren, RottenTomatoes.com

"Daniel Kaluuya and Anthony Mackie are both great as the main fighters of the film, but the real stand-out performance is from the legendary Jeremy Irons, who chews the scenery with glee." - Chris Price, Boston Herald
