Reaction: Strong numbers for this sci-fi drama, especially considering the lack of big-name actors and Ava DuVernay's less than stellar track record at the box office (her two films - Lullabies for Little Criminals and Pudd'nhead Wilson for LRF each barely broke even, while A Wrinkle in Time for Disney lost a boatload of money).

"Adapted from the Image Comics series, Ava DuVernay's Alex + Ada is a smart, contemplative science fiction drama with a likable lead couple and a solid script by H.G. Hansen." - Michael Van Patten, Slant Magazine

"The story here is fine, the characters are the issue. Donald Glover does not make for a particularly likable lead, alternating between whiny and annoying. While Sofia Boutella and Loretta Devine come off well in their roles, the rest of the supporting characters are mostly interchangeable sounding boards for Glover." - Ken Hammerschmidt, Washington Post

"Alex + Ada is a film full of strong moral and ethical questions. The film provides some of the answers, but gets sidetracked here and there by having too much going on in what is essentially a pretty simple story. Overall though, the film comes across as a thoughtful exploration of artificial intelligence and how it would affect the day-to-day life in a society." - Paul Landon, Film School Rejects
