Two rounds into Season 24 and we have our first MUST SEE film and our first comic book adaptation. Here's The Roundup....
3. R-Rated MarvelI have enjoyed that the Marvel Universe has given us a few smaller R-Rated characters as an alternative to the more family friendly characters like Spider-Man. They shouldn't make giant R-Rated films, but R-Rated smaller films are nice and a good way to help stand out from the Disney competition.
2. Luke Cage: Power Man
I had a lot of fun with the retro approach the filmmakers brought to Luke Cage. It's not only another thing that Disney would never think of doing, but it also gave the film a really unique feel.
1. Natural Selection
Great film. The trio of stars were all perfect for their roles. This actually might be my all time favorite Angelina Jolie performance. I expect all three to be major players for GRA trophies. On top of that, the script was solid and it was nice to see a return to form from director Paul Verhoeven.
3. Blockbusters
While the box office has gone fairly nicely, I'm sure the studio was hoping for one of the films in these first two rounds to do blockbuster business. That should probably be fixed with the release of The Flash #2 next round.
2. Midnight Tales
I honestly did not care for Midnight Tales. A couple of the stories were decent, but then the other couple were rough to sit through. And most importantly, they weren't particularly scary.
1. Anthology Films
In this era of blockbusters and prestige television, there simply is not room for anthology horror films in theaters. Midnight Tales tried to bring theaters back to the early 80s and flopped tremendously as a result. Even the highest grossing horror anthology film of all-time, Twilight Zone: The Movie, only managed to gross $40 million, and Creepshow grossed half that in second place. So bringing this film out, 40 years after the genre was somewhat popular, was not a smart bet.
