Plot: The first scene opens showing an old house, very messy and dirty. In the background, a sweet melody is heard and the camera moves to the room and shows two boys, Tom (Noah Jupe) and Annie (Thomasin McKenzie) singing a sweet melody for their mother Sarah (Hayley Atwell) who is lying in bed. The boy strokes her hair. The woman looks drunk and says rambling sentences. Slowly the woman falls asleep. Then a voice over tells the difficult life of the two kids in recent years. Sarah was left alone shortly after Tom was born, drugs and alcohol made her get away from her parents and she had to get by. Unfortunately, his dependence on these substances was too strong and therefore Tom and Annie were very often left alone and it was often the girl who was a mother and looked after Tom. The girl took care of her little brother in case he had a fever, prepared food and fixed the problems that the old house created. In addition, Annie was very imaginative and told ghost and horror stories by scaring her younger brother. When Sarah did not drink, she fell apart, smoked constantly, was weak and rarely left the house. In those times she could not sleep and wandered around the house like a zombie with huge bags under her eyes. She was nervous and screaming for every little thing. For example one day Tom spilled a little orange juice on a sofa cushion and Sarah after looking at her son with staring eyes took all the cushions on the sofa, took them to the garden and set them on fire. Tom and Annie watched the scene from the window, the boy was crying and his sister took him and hugged him. When Sarah drank a little she was radiant, woke up during the night to prepare a super abundant and delicious breakfast or called the school justifying their absence and taking them to the beach where she got drunk in the presence of the children. When she drank a lot Sarah would stay out all night or disappear for whole days, make strange hairstyles and put on make-up in a very heavy and almost ridiculous way. When this happens, Annie would go out and seem to totally shut herself up. Many times the two children woke up and found the house empty, with little food in the fridge and a ticket on the door with a lipstick-stained lipstick that said she would be back soon. For the past year, he had some sort of relationship with a violent man named Carl (Logan Marshall Green). The two often had violent outbursts of anger and their quarrels were strong. Often, however, they resolved into wild sex, leaving the house in disorder full of empty beer bottles and cigarettes everywhere. One evening, however, in a moment of lucidity Sarah managed to distance herself from him and order him not to be seen again. After that, Sarah had a few weeks in which she seemed to be well and seemed to have become a normal mother. He had also met a woman, Vivian (Megan Fox) who had started to spend a lot of time there and it seemed that a particular friendship was being born between the two. Vivian was kind and she was also an ex alcoholic but she was sober from a couple of Years. Vivian had brought Sarah closer to a prayer group in a nearby town and this seemed to keep Sarah out of trouble. One afternoon Tom and Annie went out to go to the park and returned around dinner time. When they enter the house the scene is bleak, Vivian and Sarah were sprawled or drunk with drugs on the floor. Annie began to scream and ran into her room, slamming the door. The next morning Sarah tells her children that she would go out to get cigarettes. Anne didn't greet her while Tom gives her a small kiss on the cheek. Sarah leaves the house and gets into the car where Vivian is behind the wheel, looking at Tom with a disconsolate air.

In the next scene we see the two children who are at home alone while 48 hours have passed and Sarah had never returned and had never given any news of herself. Suddenly the phone rings. Annie was upstairs and tells her brother to answer him. When he answers the phone he is happy and relieved to hear Mom's voice. She asks him if he is having a happy birthday and the boy, on hearing those words, hangs up the phone saying sadly that it had been the previous day. At this point we see a flashback in which we see short events of the day before between Annie and Tom, the gift made by her sister, the cake prepared together and the trip made by bus to spend a pleasant day at the beach. The flashback ends with the two sitting on the sand nearby and Annie taking pictures of the spectacular sunset by the sea. Annie asks who she was from upstairs and Tom said she was the mother. Annie's head peeked out from the top floor and started going down the stairs until she tripped and started laughing. Tom ran to help her chuckling until he felt his breath that he knew of an odor he had felt many times.

After hearing that breath that tasted of alcohol, Tom instinctively let go of his sister who fell back to the ground while laughing out loud. Tom's face was sad as Annie's laughter is heard in the background. He didn't even have the courage to try to pull her up because then she would fall again, like her mother did. At this point Tom went to his sister's room and began to rummage finding some bottles and cans of beer in the closets while the empty ones were under the bed. He went to empty the full ones in the sink. Then he ran down and emptied the pantries, emptying all the alcohol that was there. Meanwhile Annie got up and staggered trying to tell her brother that it was the first time and that it would never happen again and not to empty the bottles because Mum would get angry. Tom heard no reason and even pushed Annie away when he tried to stop him. With the last bottle of vodka the result was different and while Annie tried to grab it the bottle fell from the floor and was destroyed in a thousand pieces. Tom began to look out the window at the sky that was becoming cloudy with a storm in the distance. In the background is Annie who is kneeling on the floor trying to collect the pieces. At this point Tom goes to his room and closed himself in and began to cry until exhausted by the tension he fell asleep. He did not sleep long, a couple of hours, and was awakened by a startling thunder. Tom got up and slowly opened the door feeling a good smell coming from the lower floor. Tom walked over to the stairs and the floor was tidy and Bryan Adams' song "Everything i do" was playing on the stereo. The table is set and we see Annie who is preparing dinner while waving her hips in rhythm with the song. Tom got out and responded to his sister's warm greeting with a greeting. Dinner was silent while Annie was comically trying to get her brother to talk. The silence was stopped by the downpours of rain and the storm. A strong thunder also blew the current and they were forced to light candles to finish the dinner. Tom's anger had eased but he didn't want to show it. Annie tried to restore the power but it was not working, probably a fuse had blown and the next day they would have called the electrician. As long as Tom was helping to arrange the dishes he heard Annie screech from behind her, a moth had leaned on his hair and the boy started laughing. Tom went over to Annie and took the moth to get her out the window. The storm and rain seemed to have passed. When he opened the window a strange sound began to come from the garden, Tom bowed his head to listen better. It seemed like a kind of plaintive cry. Annie said that maybe it was Lucky Strike, the neighbors' cat at the end of the street, every so often she came for a walk in their garden. A few seconds later the noise was over. After arranging the two, they went out onto the porch and sat down to watch the sky while a cool breeze hit the two. Tom took off his sweatshirt and gave it to Annie who was a little chilled. At that moment the noise of a few minutes began again, but this time it seemed closer and more disturbing. The two looked at each other exchanging a confused look. Tom began to wander in the dark garden until his sister called him. Tom turned and saw Annie with a frightened face and ordered him to go back immediately. Annie's gaze was on the bushes next to the back fence and Tom as he came back he glimpsed something. There seemed to be a figure crouching with his knees under his chin and disturbing verses were coming out of his mouth. Tom ironically told his sister that maybe it was "Slenderman". The sister rolled her eyes when she heard that joke. At that moment the verse that came from the bushes changed and had turned into a kind of evil laugh. Indeed, at that moment the voices seemed two. Suddenly the figure rose to his feet, he seemed very thin but in the darkness he could not understand much. The two ran into the house, closing the door behind them while outside one, perhaps two creatures were approaching their home. A new thunder made them jump and the rain began to fall again. From behind the window something started to look inside and Annie took Tom's hand saying not to worry. In another window they saw another figure hitting his head slowly and repeatedly on the glass until he started slamming it harder and harder until the last blow shook all the glass. Suddenly a sound of shattered glass terrified the two who were in the center of the room and didn't know what to do. A moment later, another window also broke. Annie rummaged in the drawers and took a knife while Tom picked up an old, very worn baseball bat.

Annie looked in her pocket to find the cell phone to call the police but it wasn't there, she probably had left it outside on the porch. The two decided to quickly run upstairs as they heard the disturbing whispers of those creatures calling their names and saying to go with them. Obviously the darkness in which the house was submerged did not help, there were only the candles that they had lit during dinner. The two ran upstairs and closed in the bathroom and lock the door handle with a chair. After a while they no longer heard any noise. Annie slowly opened the door, esoteric sounds echoed from the lower level as the two figures in the shadows moved around the living room. Annie crawled to the floor, saw that Carl, Mum's ex-boyfriend, was in the center of the living room and Annie wondered what he was doing there. Looking good he was tied, without shirt and seemed unconscious. The figure began to circle around the man and began to slap him until he woke up and screamed he was free. The figure in response pulls out a knife and wounds him in the side while Carl screams in pain. Then the other figure comes out of the shadows behind him, whispers something in his ear and slits his throat as the blood falls to the ground. Annie puts her hands in front of her mouth so as not to scream and a tear falls on her face. But she was appalled to hear the words coming from a phone placed on the table "Now kill the other two devils." Annie went back to the bathroom and closed the door behind her. Soon the two heard slow footsteps climbing the stairs whistling in a disturbing way. Suddenly they heard a door slam, probably those two creatures had opened the door to Tom's room. It seemed that those two years were playing with the two. Annie tried to reassure her brother who was asking what was going on and stood up as a second door was slammed violently, probably Mom's room. The footsteps stopped near the bathroom. The tension inside the bathroom was palpable, Annie's hand gripped the blade of the knife so tightly that it hurt. She looked out of the lock and whispered to her brother who will open the door and try to distract the enemies and maybe try to retrieve the cell phone left outside. Tom tried to resist crying but Annie put her bloody hand over his mouth silencing him. Then she told him that as soon as he leaves he will have to close the door and he won't have to open it for any reason, not even for her. He kept shaking his head but Annie had now decided. The girl looked through the peephole and saw no one. It was dark in the bathroom and the only light was made by a lighter. Annie opened the door slowly and disappeared into the dark while someone screaming after her. Tom closed the door immediately. Behind him a shadow peeked out of the window, one of the two beings must have climbed somehow. Meanwhile Tom is seated on the ground with his hands on his face and his back to the window. A noise made him jump and then he heard the sound of the glass shatter. He immediately lit the lighter and found that being before him. He instinctively used the baseball bat and hit the leg that made a human lament and then hit the head with all the strength he had in his body causing the evil being to collapse on the ground. Tom approaches the body cautiously and realizes that it was a human being, he seemed dressed in a robe that he saw in rituals during horror films. When he pulled the hood away from his face, Tom leapt backwards extinguishing the lighter recognizing one of the two invaders, it was Vivian who was lying on the ground with blood on his face. Meanwhile Annie was down but had found the door closed while the other being had come down the stairs with a long curved dagger in his hand. Meanwhile, from the phone resting on the table, vocal messages kept coming, intoning rather disturbing verses of the Bible until the girl took him and threw him on the being. The girl tried to get out of the broken window but the being managed to take her by the legs and threw her to the ground on the sideboard and then went against her with the curved dagger. Annie defended herself and plunged her knife into the thigh of the creature that roared with anger and then began to chuckle and change her voice until she reached Sarah's voice tone calling Annie. At this point the being shows his face, it was really the mother. The face is full of anger with the eyes almost out of orbit, probably he had taken some mysterious psychotropic drug. Annie is shocked to see her mother in those conditions that she was trying to harm her children. Annie asked her mother "Why?" Sarah said they had always despised her and since she joined the religious group she understood what is really important. Then she says that she and Vivian were in charge of committing three sacrifices, pointing to poor Carl who died in the chair with a dagger. Then he said that Vivian is upstairs taking care of Tom. Annie tried to say something by stuttering but could not say anything and Sarah says that the time has come. Annie is on the ground while Sarah is approaching her. Suddenly the girl lifts an old tile (used as a hiding place for alcohol by her mother) behind her and takes out a bottle of vodka and throws it on her mother's face, also rubbing it in one eye. Then the two begin to fight and Annie is also injured in the abdomen while trying to reach the knife that had fallen from his hand. Sarah climbs onto Annie who tries to defend herself and is about to stab her in the chest. Annie's injury looks serious and doesn't have the strength to fight her mother. It seems that the knife is about to enter his chest but at that moment Tom comes from behind her, who uses the knife fallen to Annie to skewer him in the mother's back killing her. He approaches Annie who is losing a lot of blood. She caresses her brother's face saying that she was proud of him and then closes her eyes, losing consciousness. Tom picks up the phone on the porch and calls the ambulance that arrives in a few minutes while the camera shows the wound of his sister who is losing a lot of blood and Tom who tries to buffer it with everything he finds.

The last scene sees Tom who is in hospital with the social worker who enters the room where his sister is still alive, albeit with various bandages in the body. Tom approaches Annie and hugs her and the girl does the same.
