A Second Look: Unknown

Welcome back for another edition of A Second Look with Jeff Stockton! In this segment I will take a "second look" at a past LRF release with a fresh set of eyes.

I was in the mood of a sci-fi fix for this edition of A Second Look, which led to me choosing to take another look at Unknown, written and directed by HG Hansen. The sci-fi film starred Charlie Heaton as an angry young man who develops super powers of sorts. When it was released back in Season 13, I had very mixed feelings on the film. It had some cool moments and the overall idea worked pretty well. But it was a film with some glaring issues. At times it felt pretty unoriginal and it was also way too damn long for what is a really simple story.

Looking at Unknown now over 10 seasons after its initial release, I still found the film to be a mixed bag. The long length definitely hurt the film as it felt like there was a ton of filler in the story. That said, with some much tighter editing, it probably could have been one of Hansen's best films. There's simply not enough actual story for a jumbo-sized sci-fi film. But there is enough good stuff in there for a tight sci-fi thriller. Charlie Heaton still worked nicely in the lead role, although I found the supporting characters to be pretty underwhelming. If you have the time and patience, it's probably worth a watch though.
